The kiln site for Koryo white porcelain was discovered in 1938 at Yoochun-rhee, Boan--myun, Booan-goon, Chunra-bookdo. Before this discovery the white porcelains found in Koryo tombs were thought to be Chinese. The discovery of the kiln site at Yoochun-rhee provided a clear evidence that the white porcelain was indeed made in Korea. The Koryo white porcelain is clearly distinguishable from the Yi Dynasty porcelain in shape, decoration, and techniques. The Koryo white porcelain, like the celadon, initially received influence from China, but subsequently characteristic Koryo style was developed. From the beginning the Koryo Dynasty accempted th Buddhism as the national religion and it provided the spiritual basis for the white porcelain. In particular, the Zen-Buddhism, ome of the two major sectors of Buddhism at that time, strongly influenced the development of white porcelain. In addition, the strong and influential aristocratic society in pursuit of luxury and art stimulated the development of porcelain. Thus the Buddhism and aristocratic society provided the strong basis and influence in Koryo porcelain. In this background the Koryo white porcelain was initially developed by imitating the Sung porcelain. At that time, there was an active trade relationship between Sung and Koryo, and much culture and products were introduced to Koryo from Sung. The close relationship to Sung imfluenced particularly the cultural development of Koryo. The Koryo porccelain was strongly influenced by the Ting ware and Ying-cjing as evidenced by the similarity between the Koryo and the Chinese porcelains during the imitation stage. However, most of the Koryo white porcelatins belong to the second period, when Koryo developed her own original style, as can be seen in the porcelain pices found at Yoochun-rhee. Yoochun-rhee was also kiln site for the most advanced celadon and the white porcelain discovered there showed close similarity to the celadons in style and quality. This is a strong evidence that the Yoochun-rhee kiln site belings to the most advanced stage for the white porcelain as well. The pieces of white porcelain found in the kiln site were bowls or dishes, cups and stands, bases and covers, and the techniques used were plain, incision, relief and inlaid. The motifs such as flying cranes among clouds, lotus petals, peonies, chrysanthemums, and Ju-i-sceptre-heads. The glaze contained less iron than the celadon and was transparent with ivory or bulish shade. Fine grained white clay provided strong and dense body and potting was thinner than the celadon. Thus the white porcelain and the celadon found at Yoochun-rhee are considered to be identical in style and techniques. But in plain, inoision and relief the white porcelain seems to belong to a later stage than the celadon and in inlaid they seem to belong to the same period. Around the YEUI-CHONG period (1147-1170 AD) the inlaid technique is believed to have been developed and was applied to the celadon as well as the white porcelain at about the same time. But in the celadon inlaid was introduced to improve upon and provide variations to the existing style, while in the white procelain inlaid technique was applied more naturally for its artistic value. The wares, decoration, glaze and paste of white porcelain fragments found at Yoochun-rhee kiln site show that the site belonged to the advanced stage of white porcelain development in Koryo rather than the initial stage. In addition the discovery of the Yi Dynasty white porcelain there indicates that the site was used in the later stage of the Koryo celadon and white porcelain after the advanced stage. Thus in conclusion the white porcelain found at Yoochun-rhee is comparable to the celadon in style and quality and represents the originality and artistry of the Koryo period.-
