Bridging the Gap

Abstract

Education is considered a major prerequisite for the development of a country and the alleviation of poverty. Since the majority of the world’s poor are women, much emphasis has been placed on the education of women. In Jamaica women are the dominant group in the education system, in terms of enrolment and achievement. This dominance in the education system has not however transferred to the labour force. Women in Jamaica still face higher rates of unemployment, segregation in low paying jobs, and earn less than men within the same occupational group. The lack of economic power despite high achievements in the education system and the role of being single parents have resulted in Jamaican women, continuing to present the faces of poverty in Jamaica.;교육은 국가 발전과 빈곤 감소의 주요한 전제조건이다. 이러한 이해와 더불어 세계 빈곤층의 대다수가 여성이라는 사실로 인해, 여성 교육에 대한 많은 강조가 있어왔다. 자메이카에서 여성은 취학과 졸업의 면에서 남성보다 우세한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 그러나 교육에 있어서의 여성의 우위는 이들 여성의 노동참여로 이어지지 못하고 있다. 본 논문은 자메이카 여성들이 여전히 높은 실업률과 저임금, 같은 직급 내에서의 남녀 간 임금차별 등을 겪고 있음을 설명한다. 본 논문에서 연구자는 자메이카 여성들이 높은 교육 수준에도 불구하고 경제력 부족과 편모로서의 역할로 인해 빈곤의 늪에 빠지게 되었다고 주장한다.
