The Role of FDI in Economic Development of China

Abstract

This paper analyzes the economic development of China during the post reform period. It argues that the Chinese experience with export-led growth provides an excellent example of the phenomenon of a vent for surplus productive capacity provided by exports, which was identified by Adam Smith in the Wealth of Nations. As one of the world’s largest recipients of FDI, China has benefited from foreign multinational enterprises in various respects. This paper focuses on the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone to demonstrate the effect foreign direct investment (FDI) has in the economic development in developing countries. Shenzhen has led FDI flows into China and the economic development in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone has been remarkable. Our results show that FDI has had positive effects on various sectors in Shenzhen and in China as a whole. The positive effect of FDI in foreign firms is associated with their firm characteristics, and in particular, their access to export markets. One part of the paper seeks to investigate how FDI inflows affect employment, wages and labor productivity. The focus of this paper is on the manufacturing industries both because restructuring of the manufacturing industries is a central feature of globalization and because FDI flows into developing countries in recent years have mainly been concentrated in the manufacturing sector. The Chinese experience with the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone is a good model to analyze when considering the economic reforms other developing countries, such as Iraq.;이 논문은 개방 이후 중국의 경제발전과정을 분석한다. 수출주도형 경제성장이라는 중국의 경험은 아담 스미스가 그의 국부론에서 이야기한 수출에 의한 잉여배출현상의 한 예라고 볼 수 있다. 해외직접투자의 최대 유입국의 하나로서 중국은 외국의 다국적기업들로부터 큰 이익을 얻어 왔다. 해외직접투자의 이익 중에서도 고용증가 효과는 두드러지는 이익들 중의 하나이다. 이 논문은 특히 중국에 대한 해외직접투자가 경제발전에 미치는 효과를 심천경제특구에 주로 주목하여 밝힌다. 이 논문의 연구결과에 의하면 해외직접투자유입은 경제의 여러부문에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳐왔다. 그러한 긍정적 효과는 특히 수출에 의해 도움받은 바 큰 것으로 보인다. 해외직접투자는 고용, 임금과 노동생산성의 측면들 모두에서 중국의 노동시장에 긍정적 영향을 주어 왔다. 제조업에 대한 해외직접투자의 유입은 제조업의 세부 부문별 산업구조조정을 통해 중국경제에 큰 영향을 주었다. 중국의 심천경제특구개발에 의한 경제발전에 대한 분석은 특히 이라크와 같은 개발도상국들의 경제발전 과정에 큰 의미를 줄 수 있는 것으로 보인다.
