Entrepreneurship in Tourism for Honduran Women

Abstract

This thesis examines the unemployment situation in Honduras as one of the main problems that bring poverty to the country, especially to Honduran women. Having a way of generating income is basic for any human being to overcome poverty and to access a decent way of life. The situation in Honduras limits both men and women to the job opportunities needed to satisfy the population, and because the market tends to be male dominated, opportunities for women are fewer. After showing a detailed analysis of the poverty and unemployment situation, the tourism area is presented as a viable sector for developing women’s opportunities into the micro business development. Tourism is a relatively young sector in the country and at the same time is the third largest sector that brings income to the country. Because of its fast development and importance for the Honduran economy, it also represents an opportunity for Honduran women to take part in an important developing aspect of the economy and at the same time to involve themselves in a respectable area, gaining strength as economic entities. Tourism offers a way for Honduran women to generate income through their own businesses, and to break the poverty chains they seem trapped in.;이 논문은 온두라스의 국가적 빈곤상황 특히, 온두라스 여성의 빈곤을 야기시키는 중요한 요소인 온두라스 내의 실업문제를 고찰하기 위한 것이다. 소득마련을 위한 기회의 확보는 인간이 빈곤을 이겨낼 수 있는 가장 기초적인 수단일 뿐 아니라 그들의 기본적 삶을 위한 방법의 모색이기도 하다. 그러나 온두라스 내의 경제권력의 성차적 불평등은 결과적으로 여성의 자발적이고 주체적인 경제활동의 기회를 제한함으로써 여성의 경제활동을 더욱 더 제한시키고 있다. 이 논문에서 본인은 빈곤과 실업상황의 상호적 관계에 대해 구체적으로 분석 한 후, 온두라스의 여성실업문제에 대해 여성을 위한 소규모 사업개발의 기회를 높일 수 있는 관광산업의 육성을 그 해결방안으로 제시하려 한다. 관광산업은 온두라스에서 아직 새롭게 성장하기 시작하는 분야이지만 또 한편으로 이미 자국 내에서 세 번째로 많은 소득을 일으키는 중요한 산업으로 자리 잡았다. 관광산업은 온두라스 여성들에게 많은 취업의 기회를 제공함으로써 성인여성인구를 경제발전의 중요한 요소로 인정받게 할 뿐 아니라 더 나아가 여성을 국가경제성장의 주체적 참여자로서 인정받게 만들 수 있다. 다시 말해 관광산업은 온두라스 여성들로 하여금 그들이 처해있는 경제적 빈곤의 틀에서 주체적으로 벗어날 수 있는 한 해결책이 될 수 있다.
