Acid Violence against Women in Bangladesh

Abstract

Like many other Third World countries violence against women in Bangladesh has extremely increased and become a serious social problem. Violence against women appears in many different forms such as rape, sexual harassment, trafficking, dowry killings, domestic violence, psychological abuse, forced prostitution, and acid throwing. Some violence is closely related in essence and they share similar basic social imbalance in respect of gender. Finding the reasons of the brutal behavior towards women takes to the core excising problem of the Bangladesh society. Throughout their life women as a daughter, a friend, a wife and a mother face innumerable hurdles at home and outside their premises. The underlying reasons behind such atrocities are complex and rooted in the psyche of the society. Male dominance, religious factors, inefficiency of judicial system, economic condition, attitude of women, moral decadence are mostly playing the major role behind women’s oppression in Bangladesh. Unexpectedly, violence like acid attacks on women and girls have risen noticeably in Bangladesh especially in the last few years. Identifying the issues and explaining them with the historical trend of the social stature and recommending the possible solution was the focus of this thesis. This paper deals with various forms of violence against women and their shared links and common roots in the socio-political and ideological relations between men and women in Bangladesh society. The acid violence in Bangladesh has been identified vastly by recent statistics, reasons behind the attacks, age group of the criminals and victims, and finally the judiciary system that provides the security of the victims. On the way to discuss and analyze the violence, several issues such as the consequences and aftermath of the attacks have been added to clarify the grave situation. This thesis briefly discusses how acid attacks affect victims psychologically, physically socially, and economically. The reasons for acid violence against women are not different from those violence. What differentiates such cruelty is the use of acid-as a weapon of choice. This thesis identifies factors that have caused acid violence against women in Bangladesh. To recognize the circumstances, a case study is included thesis. Not only are the initiatives from the government and policy makers but also the activities of NGOs discussed. Finally, this thesis suggests some recommendations to be taken to eradicate violence against women. The focus of the research is to identify the reasons of gender discrimination in Bangladesh which has led to the aid attack on women.;다른 제3세계들과 마찬가지로, 방글라데시에서 여성에 대한 폭력은 상당히 증가하였으며 심각한 사회문제로 대두되었다. 방글라데시에서 여성에 대한 폭력은 성폭행과 성희롱, 인신매매, 지참금 살해, 가정폭력, 정신적 학대, 강요된 성매매 및 염산테러 등의 여러 형태로 나타난다. 실질적으로 이러한 종류의 폭력은 서로 깊이 연관되어 있으며 젠더와 유사한 사회적 불균형을 바탕으로 하고 있다는 공통점을 갖고 있다. 사회의 절반을 차지하는 여성들에 대한 잔인한 행위들의 원인을 찾는 것은 사회 문제를 제거하는 핵심이다. 여성들은 일생을 통해 딸, 친구, 아내 그리고 어머니로서 가정과 그 밖의 사회에서 무수한 난관에 직면한다. 이러한 고통의 원인은 복잡다단하며, 사회의 심리(psych) 에 뿌리를 두고 있다. 그 중에서도 남성우월적 지배, 종교적 요인, 사법체계의 무능력, 경제 상황, 여성의 사고 방식, 도덕적 퇴폐 등이 방글라데시에서 행해지는 여성에 대한 심한 차별에 영향을 미치는 주요한 요소로서 작용하고 있다. 이들 중 여성과 여아에게 행해지는 염산테러와 같은 폭력은 방글라데시에서 최근 몇 년간 현저히 증가하고 있다. 사회적 진보의 역사적 흐름과 함께 이 사안을 규명하고 설명하여 실행 가능한 해결방안을 제시하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 본 논문은 폭력의 다양한 형태와 그와 관련된 방글라데시 사회에서 남성과 여성간의 사회정치적 및 이데올로기적 관계내의 공통 분모를 다루고 있다. 방글라데시의 염산테러에 관한 최근 통계는 폭력의 이유, 가해자와 피해자의 연령집단, 피해자의 안전을 제공해주는 사법체계에 대해 광범위한 자료를 제시하고 있다. 염산테러의 심각한 상황을 명확히 분석하기 위해 몇 가지 분명한 이슈가 추가되었는데 폭력의 결과와 여파가 그것이다. 본 연구에서는 염산테러가 심리적, 육체적, 사회적 그리고 경제적으로 피해자에게 어떻게 영향을 미치는 지에 대해 간략하게 논의하였다. 방글라데시 여성에 대한 테러를 더욱 잔인하게 만드는 것은 바로 무기로서 ‘염산’을 선택하였다는 점인데 많은 요인들이 염산테러의 원인으로 지적되었다. 본 논문에서는 이 요인들을 사례연구를 통하여 조사하였다. 아울러 본 논문의 또 다른 중요 논점은 문제의 해결을 위한 정책입안이다. 마지막으로 저자는 방글라데시의 상황을 해결하기 위한 국제 NGOs 및 기타 기관들의 역할에 대해서도 논의하였다. 마지막으로, 현재의 상황을 고려하여 여성에 대한 폭력을 근절하기 위해 필요한 그리고 가능한 정책 제안을 다루고 있다.
