The purpose of the thesis is to investigate cultural and historical aspects beyond the violence against women and recognize the gender inequality as a major obstacle to human development based on the case study of Cambodia. For analysis, the study adopted a qualitative approach, including 12 week field research project in Phnom Penh. The main argument of the thesis is based on the view that violence against women is an obstacle to development by restricting women’s full participation in development projects. To examine this, the thesis begins by focusing on the root of violence against women, namely gender inequality in the cultural and historical context. The little value on women in the society leads to their fewer years of education, and it ultimately results in the increment of women’s vulnerability. Due to its multi-faceted and inter-generational aspects, the negative impact of violence against women is significant, hampering everyone. To break the vicious circle of violence against women, the government and the civil society have to focus on empowering of women as well as reshaping of masculine attitudes in the social atmosphere through strong enforcement of laws.-
