Abstract
The purpose of this research is to find the effects of child-rearing attitude of parents perceived by female students and sex-role identity of female students on their attitude toward science. Attitude toward is one of the factors that influence achievements in science and selection of science related majors or occupations. To diminish gender difference in science, it is necessary to encourage positive attitude toward science among female students. Of many factors that influence attitude toward science, child-rearing attitude of parents (family variable) and sex-role identity (individual variable) were selected in this study. The following are the hypotheses of this research. First, child-rearing attitude of parents perceived by female students influences sex-role identity of female students. Second, child-rearing attitude of parents perceived by female students influences attitude toward science of female students. Third, sex-role identity of female students influences female students’ attitude toward science. Research subjects of this study were female students enrolled in middle and high schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Questionnaires were sent to these students and responses from 374 students were used for analyses. Survey forms used were "Scale of Parents’Child-rearing Behaviors Perceived by Teenagers," "Korea Sex-role Survey," and "Attitude Toward Science Measurement." The scale of "Child-rearing attitude of parents perceived by female students" was divided into father scale and mother scale. The total score of father/mother child-rearing attitude was analyzed and its relationship to female students’ masculinity score and femininity score in sex-role identity was analyzed. There was almost no correlation. Sub-factors of child-rearing attitude of parents were divided into positive group and negative group by using 2.5 as the standard. Then, t-test was carried out to analyze differences between the groups in masculinity score and femininity score. Among factors of the father’s child-rearing attitude, monitoring, reasoning, affection influenced masculinity score. Monitoring, affection, and inconsistency influenced femininity score. Among factors of the mother’s child-rearing attitude, over-expectation influenced masculinity score whereas affection and inconsistency influenced femininity score. The relationship between "child-rearing attitude of parents perceived by female students" and "attitude toward science" was analyzed. However, almost no correlation was found. However, the father’s monitoring and over-expectation influenced the total score of the attitude toward science. For each of sub-factors of the father and the mother’s child-rearing attitude, respondents were divided into a positive group and a negative group. Then, t-test was carried out with sub-factors of attitude toward science. The following are the findings. First, father’s monitoring influenced individual value of science, self-concept toward science learning, anxiety toward science learning, and level of participation in science activities. Mother’s monitoring influenced individual value and level of participation to science activities. Second, father’s reasoning influenced self-concept toward science learning and anxiety toward science learning. Third, father’s over-expectation influenced general affection toward science, self-concept toward science learning, self-efficacy toward science learning, and the level of participation in science activities whereas mother’s over-expectation influenced self-efficacy toward science learning and the level of participation in science activities. Fourth, father’s physical abuse influenced enjoyment toward science learning. Fifth, mother’s neglect influenced general affection toward science. Sixth, mother’s affection influenced social value. The relationship between female students’ sex-role identity and attitude toward science was analyzed. There was almost no correlation. Median Split Procedure was applied to divided sex-role identity into androgyny type, masculinity type, femininity type, and undifferentiated type. To test attitude toward science among the types, one-way ANOVA was carried out. Meaningful differences among the four types in attitude toward science were found. In particular, androgyny type was characterized by a higher score in attitude toward science, in comparison with the undifferentiated type. Analysis of sub-factors of attitude toward science showed no significant differences in scores among sex-role identity types regarding academic/vocational value, social value, and individual value. However, significant differences among the four identity types were found in general affection toward science, self-concept toward science learning, anxiety toward science learning, enjoyment toward science learning, and the level of participation in science activities. In particular, the difference between androgyny type and undifferentiated type was sizeable. In addition, significant differences among the four identity types were found in self-efficacy toward science learning. Androgyny type had a higher score than both femininity type and undifferentiated type. Family factors such as low expectation of parents and cultural factors such as the perception of science as a male discipline negatively affect women’s choice of science as their major and occupation. Therefore, the family and society should develop diverse programs to promote science as a gender-neutral field of activity.
