Abstract
This dissertation delves into the subjects and symbols of vanitas in the 17th century Baroque art and seeks for how they could be recaptured in the medium of photography. Each object of vanitas still-life paintings, which were popular in the Netherlands during the Baroque, implies specific symbol and message. Dutch people of the time, who experienced both prosperous life and mental exhaustion due to a war, had a chance to look back their lives seriously. Such reflection on life was reflected in the symbols of vanitas still-life paintings. The first still life of photography was a picture of a table set for a simple meal, , by Nicephore Niepce in about 1827. A simple table set reminds of still-life paintings of the 17th century Baroque. It is just an ordinary everyday's table set, but the reflection on life is felt in it. Above all, reflective attitude toward life and death is the most fundamental subject of human being that should be continuously and most seriously considered and studied. Usually, still-life works are considered to have weak subject or contents. As still life is used to express symbols and metaphors in the historical and cultural contexts, however, still life arts can convey its theme stronger than epic works that contain various stories. The author studied the origin and symbols of vanity still life. During the time that Christianity dominated the world, only religious or historical paintings that depict god or heroes were regarded as paintings. But as the values moved from god-centered to man-centered, works dealing with human beings and even drawings of everyday's life were accepted as paintings. But the symbolic device in paintings with a subject of four elements(aqua, ignis, terra and aier) was inherited to vanitas still-life painting techniques, allowing most still life to be interpreted in the context of reflection and transience of life. Irving Penn expresses the theme of introspection by using such objects as rotten fruits and worn-out products. The author referred to Penn's works in terms of contents and techniques. The author's works, created for this dissertation, adopted platinum/palladium print process. Reasons to choose the process are, first, it expresses delicate and soft tones, and it is possible to emphasize the theme of transient life by using platinum material. Based on theoretical and methodological description, the author looked at the symbols and signs of metaphor that still cuts could have. By reinterpreting the religious symbols and the reflective meanings of vanitas still life in a contemporary perspective, the author wanted to establish a base for the future works.
