With passage of time, research outputs on historic periods continue to accumulate and new research findings appear. For instance, perspectives on the Roman Empire at the end of antiquities have been changed and revised to cope with changing research trends. Traditionally, the Roman Empire in its last phase was considered as a period of chaos and decline. Recently, however, many historians have found that the end of the Roman Empire was marked by changes and creativity rather than chaos and decline. Introducing such findings to school history classes is not easy. It is because the worlds of researchers and teachers are largely separated from each other. The world of teaching still tends to be dominated by adherence to single dominant interpretation of history. The two words should get closer to each other so that students can benefit from multiple perspective and latest findings. In this study, contents of world history textbooks about late antiquities were compared with the recent findings in the academia to understand the existing gap between the worlds of teaching and research. In addition, world history textbooks in the United States were analyzed to figure out how recent research trends are incorporated into the classroom. It was found that latest research outputs were gradually adopted in US textbooks as they undergo revisions, although they did not fully introduce the latest findings. The Korean world-history textbooks, which are much less voluminous than the US counterparts are, omitted many materials because of physical limitations. The Korean narration, which is terse in style, was often misleading. Furthermore, efforts to adopt new research achievements appeared to be insufficient. Based on the findings from the comparative analysis of Korean and US textbooks, learning and teaching plans that can be applied in classrooms were proposed so that teachers can include new trends in their teaching. Students, however, may be reluctant to learn fresh materials that are not included in their textbooks or may have difficulty in understanding them. Therefore, movie materials, which are easy to understand and familiar to students, were selected to make the teaching and learning plans. Application of the proposed teaching and learning plans was evaluated and it was found that more than half of the students reached the highest level of understanding. Introducing the latest research outputs to history classrooms is not easy. However, students can successfully attain class goals if teachers grasp students’levels and interests and select appropriate class materials that match them. The gap between the academia and classrooms will gradually narrow down if scholars and teachers work together to find optimum contents to be delivered to students and continuously strive to introduce them to classrooms.-
