A TRANSFORMATIONAL ANALYSIS OF NEGATIONS IN ENGLISH AND KOREAN

Abstract

이 논문은 Chomsky(1965)이후 발전되어온 변형문법 이론에 의하여 영어와 한국어의 부정법(Negation)에 관한 비교 연구를. 목적으로 한 것이다. 변형문법의 장점을 종래의 여러가지 문법을 바탕으로 한 비교연구에서 보다 앞으로 훨씬 더 적절한 이론적인 기반이 되리라 믿는다. 이러한 관점하에 영어와 한국어외 부정법(Negation), 특히 문장부정법(Sentence Negation)을 주된 논제로 택했다. 이 논문에서 논의된 내용은 다음과 같다. 1. 주제인 부정법을 다루기 위해 영어의 기저부(Base)에 조동사(Auxiliary)를 구성요소(Coastituent)로 설정했고 한국어의 기저부의 형성은 이홍배 박사의 이론(1970)을 근거로 하여 문장종결어미와 격조사등을 변형규칙에 의해 문장에 삽입되도록 하였다. 2. 양언어의 부정법은 부정소들(Negatives)이 문장에 미치는 문법적 특성에 따라 "구성요소 부정법"과 "문장부정법"으로 나누어 진다. 3. 영어의 부정문장은 부정소 "Not"가 조동사의 뒤에 옴으로서 생성되며 심층구조에 조동사(do)가 존재 하는 것으로 간주했다. 4. 한국어의 부정문장은 두개의 부정소 "아니" 또는 "못"이 주동사의 앞 또는 뒤에 놓임으로 이루어지고 그 심층구조는 영어와는 다른 "보어화"형(Complementation)을 취하며 여기에 변형규칙의 도입에 따라 두가지 형태의 부정문장으로 나누어진다. 5. 영어와 한국어의 부정소들의 형태, 위치, 문법적 기능, 그리고 부정문으로의 생성과정에 대한 비교분석의 결과에서 두 언어의 변형과정은 각기 독특한 형태를 취하면서도 서로 공통적이고 유사한 변형규칙과 그 규칙의 세부적인 특성이 있음을 발견하였다. 이상과 같이 변형이론을 토대로한 한국어와 영어의 부정법의 비교연구는 앞으로의 부정법 비교연구에 보탬이 되기를 바라는 마음 으로 이 논문에서 처음으로 시도해 본것이다.;I have attempted a contrastive syntactic analysis of negations of English and Korean within the theoretical framework of transformational-generative grammar in this thesis. In Introduction are presented the objectives and the necessities of the contrastive analysis of two languages. In Chapter 1 I suggested that deep structures of languages should be formulated in a more abstract form than that presented in Chomsky's Aspects. I have also presented here the base rules for both languages. I have called a special attention to the auziliary with tense feature in English and to Lee's analysis of Korean in which all the Mood endings are eliminated, to be introduced by transformational rules. In Chapter 2 I presented a preliminary classification of negative constructions. It was found that negative sentences in hoth languages could be divided into two types: constituent negation and sentence negation. Chapter 3 is concerned with sentence negations in English with negative not. I have dealt with a number of transformational rules which have to do with sentence negation: do-deletion, Neg-positioning, and Neg-transportation. Chapter 4 dealt with the processes of negation in Korean, which shows two negativo elements, ani or mos. It was pointed out that the deep structures of negative sentences contained complementation forms, the NP complement of which showed a very close connection with the features of the main verbs. I concluded this thesis by presenting contrastive sketches of negative constructions of Korean and English in Chapter 5.
