Abstract
이제까지의 검토에 따라 고교 교과서 (High School English Ⅰ, 이맹성 황적륜 지음)에 나온 정관사의 분류를 시도했는데 이 책에 나온 모든 정관사를 포함한 문장들을 기능, 의미, 구조에 중점을 두고 prementioned the, implicit the, situational the, constant situational the, generic(총칭) the, modifying(수식) the, proper noun(고유명사) 과의 관계의 the, 시간의 the, 방향의 the등 11개 항목으로 나누어졌으며, 총 482개중 modifying에 의한 the, implicit the, generic the, prementioned the, proper noun the, 시간의 the, situational the, constant situational the, 방향의 the, 도입의 the의 순으로 빈도수가 높았다. 위의 분석에 의하여 고등학교 학생들의 관사지식을 평가해보기 위하여 시험을 해보았다. 이 시험문제는 되도록 쉬운 문장을 택하고 교과서에 나타난 빈도수와 난이도에 따라 문항을 배정했다. 그 결과 25점만점 중 가장 높은 점수는 21점, 최하점수는 10점이었고 평균점수는 16점이었다. 문제에 따라 점수를 분석해보면 환경상, 문맥상의 이해를 필요로 하는 the (prementioned, situational, implicit, constant situational)는 정답율이 70%, modifying the는 69%, 기타는 56%, generic the는 58%였다. This is a study on the definite article. The goal of this study is to compile a practical guide of teaching for Korean high school students. I looked throughly into descriptions by some grammarians such as Sweet, Nesfield, Curme, Jespersen, Fries and Yotsukura. Their theories are divided into 3 modes. That is contextual analysis, lexical analysis and structural analysis. Sweet, Nesfield, Curme and Jespersen were interested in the meaning of a certain word with the definite article comparing it with the same word with the indefinite or zero article. Recent linguists, such as Fries and Yotsukura put emphasis on the formalistic criteria, especially linguistic structure. This type of analysis is called structural analysis. The definite article was derived from the old English se, the masculine nominative case. About 16 century, it came to set up its usuage as a definite article. Jespersen and Kiuisinga claimed that the definite article was derived from the old demonstrative pronoun, but Nesfield and Curme insisted that it was derived from the old demonstrative adjective. The modern English grammarians, Fries and Sweet claimed that the definite article is a function-word or mark-word used as an adjective. In Chapter IV, I classified the definite article in the high school English textbook, High School English I (1978) by Lee Maengsung and Hwang Juckryoon. All the sentences which contain the definite article are chosen. I classified the definite articles in these sentence in accordance with its function, meaning and linguistic structure. I classified them into 10 items. The items are: prementioned the, implicit the, situational the, constant situational the, generic the, modifying the proper noun the, directional the, time the, introductory the. Frequencies of its occurrance in the textbook are as follows : modifying the 248 items, implicit the 78 items, generic the 45 items, prementioned the 44 items, proper noun the 18 items, time the 16 items, situational the 13 items, constant situational the 12 items, directional the 4 items, introductory the 2 items. Next I have tested high school students about their understanding of the definite article. The test paper consisted of 25 questions. The highest mark is 21 points and the lowest mark is 10 points out of g2 students. The average points is 16. The rate of the correct answers is the following: 1. prementioned the, implicit the, situational the, constant situational the ; 70% 2. generic the ; 58% 3. proper noun the ; 66% 4. modifying the ; 69% 5. other questions ; 56% Consequently I have noticed that the student's usage of articles is both subconscious and habitual. Therefore, I think, teachers should teach the definite article to the students as follows: firstly, in the case of prementioned the, implicit the, situational the and constant situational the, we should explain their contexts and situations in sentences. Secondly, when we teach generic the, we should explain the grammatical structure and meaning of it. Thirdly, when we teach proper noun the or modifying the, we should repeat the sentences (i.e. pattern practice) in which it is contained in order to for them become habitualized in the use of the definite article.
