Abstract

This thesis is a study on the analysis of "The young person's Guide to the Orchestra op.34" composed by Benjamin Britten. Britten composed many works. His instrumental works include many types: solo, chamber-music, concerto, symphony etc. There are many variational styles in his instrumental works. He revived the music styles of the prosperous Baroque-like passacaglia, fugue, ritornello as the modern style, and on the other hand, his works appeared in the sonata and free forms. His instrumental music has both a lyric side and a dramatic one. On the basis of formation of the classical music, we are able to find modern senses through his works. The world of Benjamin Brittents music basically consists of church modes, pentatonic, diatonic, major and minor of the musical scale, and his harmony includes cluster tone, the third and fourth in modern irregular rhythm and various changes of beat. Most music has its own forms and there are many kinds of music which are composed of transition with the third. "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra op.34" is a variation on the theme by Henry Purcell, its theme suggested six times, thirteen variation and fugue. The variational feature is to change and develop freely in three major music styles of the opposite feature suggested in theme as each variation. From the theme to the variation and its fugue, the whole music are continued. Each theme and variation was closely formed to be able to find its in sensitivity, music clor dynamic power of expression, and articulation etc. whenever each instrument was introduced. The music is a kind of educational film for the instruments. And the young people who are short of the instrumental knowledge, may be thought to have effective educational values with the introduction to the instruments. The modern and classic characteristics of the music and its musical deployment and formation have been estimated to have high musical value.;이 論文은 Benjamin Britten의 「The Yong Person's Guide to the Orchestra op.34」를 分析考察한 것이다. Benjamin Britten은 Henry Purcell이후의 가장 뛰어난 英國의 作曲家로 評價되며 그의 作品은 그 作品의 數가 많고 器樂曲의 境遇 樂器編成에 있어서도 獨奏, 室內樂, 合奏, 교향곡에 이르기까지 多樣한 形態를 보이고 있다. 그의 器樂作品은 變奏曲 樣式이 많고 Passacaglia, Fugue, Ritornello 같은 Baroque 時代 隆盛했던 音樂樣式들을 近代的인 感覺으로 再現시켰으며 Sonata形式, 自由로운 形式의 曲들도 많이 보여 진다. 이러한 Britten의 器樂曲들은 抒情과 劇的인 畵面性을 지니면서 古典的인 音樂的 構成을 바탕으로 近代的인 感覺을 느끼게 하는 曲들로 인정되어진다. 聲樂曲은 주로 連歌曲 形態가 많고, Treble Voice를 위한 合唱曲, 宗敎的 內容의 合唱曲, 無伴奏 合唱曲등에서도 많은 作品을 남기고 있다. 특히 그의 聲樂曲은 聲樂과 함께 演奏되는 器樂編成이 多樣하고 어린이를 위한 曲도 聲樂과 Opera樣式으로 여러曲을 남기고 있다. Benjamin Britten의 音樂은 音階的으로 長, 短音階를 위시해서 교회선법, 5음음계, 온음계를 주축으로 이루어지며, 近代的인 불규칙리듬, 다양한 拍子의 變化위에서 화성은 3도구성, 4도구성들을 사용하였다. 대부분의 음악은 조성을 가지며 3도 관계의 전조로 이루어지는 音樂들이 많다. 「The Yong Person's Guide to the Orchestra Op.34」는 Henry Purcell의 주제에 의한 變奏曲이며 6번에 걸쳐 제시되는 주제와 제시된 相反된 性格의 3가지 주요 음형을 매 변주마다 자유롭게 변형, 발전시켰다. 주제에서부터 변주, Fugue에 이르기까지 모든 音樂은 끊이지 않고 이어져 있으며 각 주제나 각 변주의 性格과 Tempo, 그리고 음악적 분위기가 全曲을 통해서 알맞게 안배되어 있어서 音樂은 지루하지 않게 잘 연결되고 있다. 각 樂器가 소개될 때마다 그 樂器가 가질 수 있는 민첩성, 음색, 다이나믹의 表現力, articulation등을 내 보일 수 있도록 모든 주제와 변주는 세밀하게 구성되어 있다. 이 音樂은 管絃樂器에 대한 敎育用영화를 위한 음악으로서 管絃樂器들에 대하여 잘 알지 못하는 靑少年들에게 樂器의 소개를 효과적으로 하고 있다는 점에서 敎育的인 價値가 높다고 생각되어지며, 이 曲이 갖는 近代的이면서 古典的인 特徵이나 曲의 전개나 구성 면에서 있어서도 음악적인 價値가 높게 인정되어진다.
