대조분석의 재평가

Abstract

언어습득이론의 전통은 경험주의자의 전통과 이성주의자의 전통으로 나누어질수 있다. 경험주의자의 전통은 人間의 언어속에는 "마음"이란 존재하지 않는다고 생각하며 외부세계가 여러 종류의 지식을 부과한다고 주장한다. 그리고 人間은 외부세계에 의해서 만들어지는 습관을 가진 기계라고 생각한다. 이 이론은 습관형성이론이라고 불리워진다. 합리주의자의 전통은 人間만이 人間의 언어를 배울수 있는 유일한 동물이라고 생각하며 정신적인 활동을 할 수 있다고 주장한다. 다시 말하면, 합리주의자들은 언어가 분명히 정신적인 현상이라는 사실을 다루고 경험주의자들은 관찰할수 있는 언어행위만을 그 과학적인 대상으로 다룬다. 경험주의자의 습관형성이론에 따르면 학습자가 외국어를 배울때 범하는 error를 예측할수 있다. 이러한 error는 학습자의 모국어가 외국어와 다를때 나타난다. 이것을 "interference error"라고 부른다. 합리주의자의 창조적구성이론의 입장에서 보는 error는 이러한 error 와는 아주 아르다. 이것은 모국어 습득의 경우처럼 외국어 자제내의 어려움으로 인해서 발생한다. 그리고 모국어의 구조가 외국어의 구조에 전이된다고 보지 않는다. 대신에 학습자가 새로운 언어를 조직하고 생성하는 과정에서 발생한다. 이것을 "developmental error"라고 한다. 우리나라 학생들의 error유형을 분류하기 위해서 66개 항목을 번역과 통제작문에 의해서 중2학생들과 고1, 고2 학생들에게 3회에 걸쳐서 테스트하였다. 결과적으로 우리나라의 학생들은 Developmental error보다는 Interference error가 더 많았다. 그 이유를 그들은 native speaker와 접할 수 있는 기회가 별로 없고 언어실험실과 같은 실제 언어행위 상황에 유사한 학습시설도 많지 않기 때문이라고 보았다. Error분석이란 외국어교수 계획수립이나 교수법이론에 공헌할 수 있는 부분적 방법에 지나지 않는다. 그러나 언어학습의 난이도를 알기위해서는 꼭 필요하다. 그러므로 앞으로는 더 많은 error분석이 이루어, 지기를 바라며 본 논문이 그러한 분석의 한 단계가 될 수 있기를 바란다.;Theoretical traditions of language learning try to carry out their presuppositions about what language is and how it is learned. These traditions has been devided into two assumptions of empiricist and rationalist camps. The empiricist tradition maintains that there is no mind and the outside world imposes various kinds of knowledge upon man. Human being is considered a machine with habits which have been forced upon him by the outside world. This theory of language acquisitions is called the habit formation theory. The rationalist tradition insists that man is the only animal that can learn vocal languages, which enable him to be active in mental activities. In other words, the rationalist views language to be a mental phenomenon and the empiricist has to do with the linguistic science which must exclude all evidence about language except the observable overt linguistic behabior. According to the empiricist's habit formation theory, certain kind of errors is predicted in the speech of children learning a second language. These errors should appear where the child's second language is different from their native language and are called the "interference errors". The rationalist's creative construction theory predicts quite different kind of errors. The child makes an error when he reconstructs the new language independently of his knowledge of his own native language. These errors are not the result of the first language transfer onto the structures of the second language. Instead, the latter error type results from the process which the child uses to organize and produce the new language. These errors are called the "developmental errors". To classify the errors made by Korean students of English, 66 test-items were administered to the students of the 2nd year of a middle school and to the first and the second year students of a high school both by translation and controlled composition methods. The result has shown more interference errors than developmental errors. The outcome may partly be ascribed to the fact Korean students of English are not favored with the real communication situation in English, which is of utmost importance to a second language acquisition.
