This is a study on negation. The theoretical framework for this study is based on the generative transformational theory of grammar. Most of the data in this study is from English and Korean. In this study, various theories on negation by Klima(1964), Park(1967), Song(1967), Lee(1970, 1972), Oh(1971) and Lakoff(1970) have been critically reviewed and the explanation for the Korean negation in terms of a possible universal theory on negation has been proposed. And it has been found that Oh's (1971) NEG-Lowering can explain the difference of two languages and contribute to a possible universal theory on negation, although it has some residual problem.
