Abstract

A Patriotic enlightenment movement (1905 - 1910) was the one to recover national rights which had been depriving by imperialist Japan. After winning Russia-Japan war, imperialist Japan aggravated national aggression. At a crisis of this sort, press and academy's save - the - nation drive by education and increasing of industry was vigorous. The purpose of this study was to examine the WhangSung ShinMun which had initiated press campaign movement by analizing editorials from 1905 to 1910. And further, through this study it would be able to prove the reality of the patriotic enlightenment, I thought. That's why it is worth while to discuss WhangSung ShinMun's cognition of the times and ways to cope with them, seeing that, first newspaper's great role in enlightenment and guidance, second even though accepting modern sciences, for WhangSung ShinMun constituted intellectuals with confucian ideas. So I proved what WhangSung ShinMun's cognition about aggression of imperialist Japan and criticism about government and society linked to self-strengthen ＆ reformation ideas and what it developed. WhangSung ShinMun had indefinite of criticism for Imperialist Japan's aggression. Instead of, WhangSung ShinMun was presented direction about reformation through critical cognition toward the government officials and society. So the self-strengthen ＆ reformation ideas are as follows. WhangSung ShinMun was deeply affected from the Theory of Social Evolution, and realize that so in these competitive days, first, the national power can be recovered by self-strengthen, that is educational enlargement and the increasement of production, second, even though aiming at modern nation, at a crisis becoming the loss of the national rights, WhangSung ShinMun take it most important to encourage national consciousness through the study of the national classics that is, religion, history, geography, national script. And WhangSung ShinMun advocated reformation of confucianism, this is why it regarded the class of confucian scholars as the greatest the driving force of an enlightened. Education that is, accounting much of modern sciences so inspired patriotism in the heart of people through improving modern knowledge, so aimed for recovery of national rights. The way was establishment of school, the compulsory education, teacher's training, etc. A balanced development of agriculure, trade, industry(based on agriculture) was enlightened in increasing of productions and promotion of industries. But particularly, while taking a serious view of scientific skill WhangSung ShinMun planned to form modern industrial capital, intended to achieve national self-supporting economy. WhangSung ShinMun had an important place in the history of Korean press in the respect that it accomplished the role of enlightening the public through advocating self-strengthen.;애국계몽운동은 1905년부터 1910년까지 일본에 의한 국권의 침탈이 가중되는 시기에 일어날 국권을 회복하려는 운동이었다. 교육과 산업의 진흥이라는 방법으로 구국의 운동을 전개하였던 당시는 언론과 학회에 의한 운동이 활발하였다. 본고는 그중 언론계몽을 주도하였던 황성신문을 통하여 애국계몽의 의의를 고찰해보고자 한 것이었다. 방법은 논설의 분석을 통해서 하였다. 당시의 상황에서 신문이 가지는 중요성과 신학문을 수용한 유교적 지식인들로 구성된 황성신문의 집필진들로 볼 때 황성신문의 시대인식의 논리와 그 대처방법을 살펴보는 것은 국권 상실의 과정에서 의미가 있다고 보았기 때문이다. 따라서 황성신문이 보았던 제국주의 침략에 대한 인식 및 정부관리를 비롯한 사회의 부패와 무능에 대한 비판이 어떻게 자강개혁사상으로 이어졌으며 그리고 그것이 어떻게 전개되었는가를 규명하여 보았다. 황성신문은 제국주의 침탈의 현실을 정확히 지적하지 못하였다. 대신 정부관료와 사회에 대한 비판을 통하여 자강개혁의 방향성을 제시받았다. 따라서 계몽의 내용은 사회진화론을 통한 경쟁의 사상을 바탕으로 근대국민국가를 지향하면서도 국권이 상실되어가는 위기속에서 국권의 회복을 도모하기위한 국학 즉 國敎, 國史, 地理, 文字를 통한 민족의식의 고취와 유교의 개혁이 주장되었다고 하겠다. 방법으로는 교육을 통한 애국심의 고양과 실업의 발전이 논의되었다. 교육에 대한 계몽은 신교육 즉 애국심과 신지식을 습득함으로써 전국민이 개명해야 국가의 위기를 극복할 수 있다고 보고 방법면에서 의무교육, 사범교육, 교과서의 문제등을 계몽한 것이었고 식산에 대한 계몽은 산업진흥의 필요성을 계몽하고 방법을 제시하는 활동으로 지주들의 자본을 이용하여 근대적인 산업자본을 형성해 민족자립경제를 이룩하자는 것이었다. 농업을 주체로 하면서도 과학기술의 의의를 높이 평가하고 공업과 상업을 통한 발전을 계도하였다. 이렇게 볼 때 황성신문은 국권이 침탈되고 있던 위기 상황 속에서 이를 극복하기위한 대책의 하나로써 자강 개혁 즉 실력양성을 주장하여 민족을 계몽한 데에 큰 의의를 부여할 수 있을 것이다.
