日本의 韓國倂合過程에 對한 硏究

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to survey the Japanes annexation of Korea from the broader context of the informational history, not merely from the narrow standpoint of the Korean history. For this, by examining the critical years between the establishment of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance and the Japanese annexation of Korea, it will be scrutinized how Britain and the United States affected on the moulding of the destiny of Korea by their Far Eastern policies. Thus, most of all, it will be expounded how the First Anglo-Japanese Alliance changed the political situations in Korea by explicating its forming background and process. Then, Roosevelt's anti-Russian and pro-Japanese policy will be critically examined to show how much support it meant to Japan, who tried to occupy Korea by force. Moreover, it will be emphasized that the Taft-Kstsura Secret Pact and the Second Anglo-Japanese Alliance played the pivotal roles in bringing about the final annexation of Korea by Japan. Lastly, it will be expounded why Japan had to spend five more years in annexing Korea, although she plundered the sovereignty of Korea in 1905 by the 1905 Korean-Japanese Pact, which she forced Korea to sign. As a result the gradual worsening of the relation between the United States and Japan will be emphasized as its main cause. It should be pointed out however, that this paper was never intended as a comprehensive survery of the Japanese annexation of Korea. It just tried to explain this historical event from its relation to the Gerat Powers in the Far East. Even though far from satisfactory, if this paper should prove helpful to those students who try to graft the Korean History to the World History, the present writer should feel greatly rewarded.;본 연구는 한국근대사를 35년간이나 단절시켰던 일본의 한국병합이라는 문제를 동아시아를 둘러싼 국제관계사적 관점에서 정리해 보고자 시도한 것이다. 영일동맹의 성립으로부터 일본의 한국병합에 이르는 시기를 연구의 범위로 설정하고 英·美의 동아시아정책이 한국의 운명에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는가에 초점을 맞추었다. 우선 제 1차 영일동맹의 성립배경과 그 과정을 살펴봄으로써 그것의 결과가 한국의 정황을 어떻게 변화시켰는가를 다루었고, 이어 루즈벨트의 反露親日政策이 한국을 보호국화하려는 일본에게 있어 어느 정도까지 지원이 될 수 있었던가를 분석하였다. 또한 태프트-桂비밀협정과 제 2차 영일동맹으로 이어지는 일련의 변화가 일본의 을사조약 강압에 결정적인 영향을 미쳤다는 보다 구체적인 내용을 밝혔다. 그리고 마지막으로 1905년까지 일본의 한국병합과정이 급속히 추진된 데 反하여 그 이후 뜻하지 않은 장애물로 대두된 미·일관계 악화로 말미암아 일본이 을사조약으로 사실상의 한국통치권을 장악했음에도 불구하고 병합의 시기를 결정하는 데 5년이라는 긴 시간을 소비할 수 밖에 없었던 사실을 해명해 보았다. 여러가지로 미흡하기는 하지만 본 연구가 일본의 한국병합과정을 동아시아를 둘러싼 열강間의 관계속에서 究明함으로써 韓末의 역사적 推移를 세계사와 접목시켜 이해하고자 하는 노력에 一助가 되었으면 하는 것이 筆者의 바램이다.
