Abstract
There are very few contemporary weaving and dyeing techniques that do not have a long and solid historical base. Ikat is no exception, Ikat came into being In about the sixth or the seventh century and has since been developed all through out the world. Wearing clothes woven by this technique is the symbol of wealth and hish status in society. This technique is subdivided Into the Warp Ikat, the Weft Ikat, the Double Ikat and the Compound Ikat. One of the characteristics of Ikat is that the borderline shaped by the adjacent colors according to the pattern spreads out smoothely and naturally. This technique, the process of which is dyeing by winding of binding the warp and the weft apart of both of them together with yarn or other resisting materials in compliance with the predesigned pattern, is very difficult. While Indonesian and Japanese Ikat textile has been guaranteed the quality, Korean Ikat textile has not been developed and appreciated fully yet. Traditional Ikat has developed various and exquisite patterns which are unique to the respective area. Using natural colors, traditional Ikat can keep the color permanently. But it is a very hard work to extract natural colors from plant and you have to spend so much time in dyeing in case of using traditional Ikat technique. Low clarity of color is also one of Its defects. Furthermore, because the technique was handed over secretly, the historical approach to traditional Ikat is not easy. In case of modern Ikat, the fabric artists or the practitioners can express their cultural uniqueness more freely owing to the advent of the chemical colors. These chemical colors make it possible for the artists to express what they are aiming at with more versatile materials, making the synthetic fiber available for dyeing. Now, more original and strong artistic works are required and it is time for the Korean fabric artists to develop Korean Ikat actively. And we should consider the industiral aspect with the artistry and develop new Ikat textile which can be mass-produced for the clothing and the necessaries of life. I insist that this task be achieved with the usage of the chemical colors. But there are some problems, Firstly, because the Ikat has been handed over secretly, the exact origin and historical background is not obvious. Secondly, using the chemical colors may be not the best and last way for Ikat and more study is needed. I tried to solve some problems in modern Ikat on the basis of theory and practice. I sinserely hope that this thesis would be helpful in the field of the textile industry.
