멤피스 스타일(Memphis Style)의 Coffee Set개발에 관한 연구

Abstract

전통적인 디자인은 대중시장을 통한 모든 사람들의 사용을 위해 중성적이고 표준적인 물건으로 표현하는 것을 목표로 해왔다. 그러나 현대 산업사회에서의 새로운 디자인은 모든 사람을 위한 상품이 아니라 그 반대로 물건의 사용자를 선택해야 하는 양상으로 변모해 가고 있으며 이는 곧 디자인이 주체가 되어 대중을 선도해 나가는 것을 의미한다. 이 전에는 기능주의에 의한 합리성과 몰개성, 획일화를 추구해오던것이 경제성장을 맞아 '새로움'을 지향하며 무한한 창조와 더불어 인간의 정신세계의 만족감 마져 극대화시키는 새로운 디자인을 요구하게 되었다. 대중들은 이러한 점에 기인하여 현실속의 단조로움과 획일성으로 부터 해방되고 경이로움과 함께 흥미를 유발시키며, 낙관적인 성격을 체험케하여 정신적인 순화를 일으켜서 함께 공감할 수 있는 새로운 조형물을 선호하게 되었다. 그러므로 본 연구자는 이같은 욕구를 충족시켜 주기위해 '멤피스'라는 양식을 접목시켜 나갔다. 또한 구태의연한 디자인 양식과 고식화된 개념을 탈피한 급진적인 디자인 운동의 일환인 멤피스를 바탕으로 자유롭게 디자인 하였으며 커피세트의 조형화 작업을 통하여 시각적인 전달과 더불어 인간의 내면적 욕구에 만족감을 부여하고자 하는데 목적을 두었다. 연구방법은 멤피스에 관한 이론적 배경과 멤피스를 이끌어간 주요인물과 조형성에 관해 고찰해 보았으며 이 점을 근간으로 커피세트의 조형성 개발에 접근시켜 보았다. 형태적인 특성과 과감한 색채의 사용, 표면의 패턴 장식 등을 중요한 지배요소로 보아 새로운 감각의 현대적 디자인을 하는데 주안점을 두었고, 시각적으로 전달되는 유모어와 위트, 이를 통한 연상작용으로 인하여 사용자로 하여금 신선한 충격과 더불어 정신세계의 순화마져 꾀하는데 역점을 두었다. 작품제작 방법은 석고형틀을 제작하여 이장주입성형을 하였고 소성방법은 1차는 850℃에서, 2차는 1250℃로 소성하였다. 색채와 패턴의 사용에 따라 소성방법을 달리하는데 3점은 전사지를 부착하여 800℃로 3차 소성하였고, 3점은 던칸유약을 바른후 1000℃로 3차 소성하여 마무리 하였다. 그리고 4점은 던칸유약을 도색하여 1000℃로 3차 소성한 기물위에 또다시 전사지를 부착하여 800℃로 4차소성을 하였다. 멤피스는 기능주의에 반하여 등장하게된 새로운 양식으로 다소 기능적인 면이 결여 되어 있기는 하나 완전히 기능성이 배제되어있는 조형성만을 주구하는 형식을 취하는것은 아니었다. 본 연구자는 멤피스 양식이 훗날 기능적인 측면에서의 불합리함들이 이미 이들 작가들과 사용자들에 의해 인식되고 표면화되어 바로 쇠퇴되었으나, 멤피스의 조형적인 특성에 관해 흥미와 관심을 가지게 되었으므로 이를 바탕으로 새롭게 디자인하여 커피세트와 접목시켜 연구해 나가고자 하였음을 명시해 두겠다. 그러므로 실용기 제작에 앞서 기능적인 면을 최대한 고려해야 되기는 하나 다소 미약함을 보이며 멤피스의 조형적인 개념을 바탕으로 한 조형성 개발에 주안점을 두고 제작하였다. 결과적으로 본 연구를 통하여 멤피스양식의 커피세트를 조형화 함으로써 새로운 디자인 창출분야에 기반을 다지게 되며 새로운 경험과 확고한 의식을 심어주는 기회로 삼아 그 가치를 인식하고 디자인 영역을 확대시켜 폭넓은 가능성을 제시하는 계기가 되었으면 한다.;The goal of traditional designs was to express things into the neutral and standard ones for the use of everyone through public market. But the modern designs in the present industrialized society have entered on a new phase to choose customers instead of producing goods for everyone. That means design is now guiding the masses as a subject. Furthermore, it tends to seek the communication between man and an object by granting the psychological and emotional contents into physical forms. In the former days when the modernism prevailed, people pursued functionalistic rationality, removal of individuality and standarization. But in accordance with economic growth, people come to demand new designs which aime at 'novelty' and maximization of their satisfaction as well as infinite creation. In this point, demand of masses made the new culture called 'Memphis', and it have sympathized with the ideology of Memphis to become absorbed naturally. I, the author of this study, have freely designed coffee sets based on Memphis, a link in the chain of radical design movement cast off the conventional design styles and fixed ideas. And through formation of coffee set, I have tried to give satisfaction to the inner need of man together with visual projection. As the approach of this study, theoretical background of Memphis, important persons who led it and its formative characteristics have been investigated to develop certain formativity of coffee set. considering the formative characteristic, use of bold colour and pattern decoration of surface as the important control elements, I have made efforts to produce modern designs of new sensitivity and to make a user feel the purification of the mental world as well as fresh shock through the association process of mind based on the humour and wit visually projected. In making actual works, a plaster mould was made at first, and next the inlaying modling technique was used. As to the burning method, clay was burnt at 850℃ at first and at 1250℃ next. Thr burning method is differed by the colour and pattern of works. Among my works, three were burnt at 800℃ after adhered with printing paper, and another three were completed after painted with duncan glaze and burnt at 1000℃ there times. And the remaining four works were painted with Dancan glaze, burnt at 1000℃, adhered with printing paper and finally burnt at 800℃ four times. consequently, I could harden the ground for producing new designs by making the Memphis style coffee sets, and it is my hope that this study could provide an opportunity for the persons who have the consciousness of same quality at mine to seek new experiences and concrete consciousness instead of blindly following and imitating the radical tentative plans, and to recognize the value of the latter and extend the realm of design.
