연(蓮)의 이미지를 형상화한 현대의상 연구

Abstract

20세기에 들어와 세계화의 추세에 따른 서구의 조형양식과 방법론이 도입됨에 따라, 우리는 전통과 현대와의 조화라는 문제에 갈등을 느끼게 되고, 고유의 것은 외래적인 것에 밀려나 우리의 전통은 낡은 가치와 양식으로 오인되었다. 이런 시대적 상황 속에서 민족적인 것일수록 오히려 국제성을 띠게 된다는 사실을 자각하여, 예술계에서는 우리의 전통모티브를 찾아내고 이를 바탕으로 전통과 현대와의 만남의 길을 모색하려는 창조적 조형 활동의 전개가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 전통적 소재의 새로운 표현방법을 모색함에 있어, 자연과의 합일을 꾀하고자 했던 우리조상들의 정신성이 함축되어져 표현된 연(蓮)이라는 소재를 조형적 모티브로 선택하여, 복식 디자인에 있어서 전통의 재창조라는 가능성제시와 함께 한국적 모티브의 표현영역확대에 그 의의를 두고자 한다. 본 연구를 위한 이론적 배경으로는, 첫째, 인류문명의 시원과 더불어 역사에 등장한 연(蓮)의 형태적 특성을 살피고, 이집트문명과 그리이스신화, 인도의 민속신앙, 힌두사상과 불교, 그리고 중국과 우리나라의 종교와 설화에 나타나는 연꽃의 의미를 알아본다. 둘째, 우리나라에 나타나는 연화문의 기본형식을 기원전 3~1세기경의 인도에서 나타나는 부채꼴모양의 형식과, 4세기 북위 운강석굴의 불상광배에서 보여지는 정면형의 연화문형식으로 인식하고, 우리나라에서 독자적 특징을 갖으며 전개되는 양상과 각 연화문 발생지역에서의 표현양식의 특징을, 유물과 유적에 나타난 연문양을 중심으로 고찰한다. 셋째, 현대적 의미의 전통의 재창조를 위해 조형 예술가들이 지향해야할 가치와, 그런 맥락속에서 현대예술에서 표현되어지는 연모티브에 대해 살펴본다. 작품은 이론적 고찰을 통하여 나타난 연의 상징성과 조형성에 착안하여 현대적 감각에 중점을 둔 총 8점의 작품을 실물제작 하였다. 이러한 연구과정을 통한 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 복식조형에 있어서 전통모티브의 도입과 제시는, 전통모티브의 사용가능성을 둘러싸고 습관적으로 가지고 있던 그릇된 관념을 깨고 모든 전통모티브가 조형 활동의 대상이 될 수 있음을 인식할 수 있다. 둘째, 우리전통적인 것을 응용할 수 있는 가능성의 인식과 또 서로 다른 방법에 의한 다양한 표현가능성을 제시할 수 있다. 셋째, 전통모티브의 새로운 표현방법의 모색을 통해 일반인들에게 민족문화에 대한 긍지를 고취시킬 수 있다. 넷째, 조형예술과 맥락을 같이하는 창조적 의상활동을 통해 실용성을 위주로 하는 일반대중의 복식생활에 활력을 줄 수 있다. 이상의 결과로, 전통의 표현은 곧 우리 민족문화의 긍지를 심어주고 현재 우리생활을 활동적인 예술의 차원으로 끌어 올릴 수 있는 가능성을 제공해 줌을 인식할 수 있다. 앞으로, 우리 의상계에서는 전통모티브를 이용한 의상의 대중적 표현을 가능케 하기 위하여 과거 전통예술에 대한 지식과 그에 따르는 감각적 경험을 토대로 인체, 자연, 사회라는 환경과 조화되는 합리성을 지닌 복식문화의 추구가 필요하다 할 수 있다. 아울러, 과거전통의 계승을 바탕으로 한국인의 정신적 구심점을 찾고 현대에 맞는 전통의 재창조작업을 통해 국제사회에서 선도적 역할을 할 수 있는 문화적 기반을 닦아야 하리라 생각한다.;Since the 20th century began, our own tradition and culture have been seriously threatened by those of the west. However, recently our art community has rediscovered the fact that the most nationalistic can be the most cosmopolitan. This has motivated the contemporary korean artists to search for our own traditional motifs and create artistic works based on them which attempt to harmonize the traditional and the contemporaneity. This thesis belongs to this stream. Specifically, this thesis focuses on the 'Lotus' as the object of artistic motif and attempts to incorporate our tradition in the contemporary fashion design based on it. We first examine how historically the lotus has been reflected in the Egyptian, Greek, Indian, Hindu, Buddhistic, Chinese, and Korean culture. Then we examine how the works based on lotus in Korea, although influenced by those in India and China, have been developed in their own way, Next, we suggest how we can use 'lotus motif' as a way of recreating the tradition in the contemporary sense of the word. We present eight works which were motivated by the symbolic and formative value of lotus and which attempt to appeal to the modern taste. The conclusion of this thesis is as follows. First, every traditional motif can be the object of the modern formative arts in general and the modern fashion design in particular. Second, we can develop diverse ways of expression by applying our traditional motifs. Third, by developing new methods of expressing traditional motifs we can instill into the minds of the masses the pride on our national culture. Forth, Through creative clothing which borders on formative arts, we can vitalize the clothing life of the masses, the focus of which is on the practicality. I hope that this thesis will help make our community be interested in our traditional motifs and develop more design works based on them for the masses.
