(The) Great Gatsby에 나타난 미국의 이상주의와 물질주의

Abstract

Fitzgerald는 물질적인 번영으로 인해 정신적인 황무지를 초래하였던 미국의 1920년대를 배경으로 하여 한 개인의 꿈의 실패와 미국의 이상의 상실을 연관지어 The Great Gatsby에서 다루고 있다. Fitzgerald는 인간의 삶에 있어서 자아에 대해 가지는 낭만적인 환상의 가치를 인정하고 있었다. 그리하여 작품에서 꿈을 추구하는 인물들을 주로 다루고 있다. 그러면서 그는 등장인물이 가지는 개인의 이상과 미국의 문명을 연결시킴으로써 작품에 역사적 의미를 부여하게 된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 미국문명의 주동력이라 할 수 있는 이상주의와 물질주의가 그의 대표작 The Great Gatsby 에서는 어떻게 나타나고 있는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 미국에는 역사초기부터 자유, 평등, 박애의 낙원을 설립하고자 하는 이상과, 세속적 물질을 향한 관심이 공존하면서 미국인들의 생활 전반에 영향을 미쳐왔다. 그러나 남북전쟁 이후부터 산업화와 도시화가 촉진되기 시작하면서 미국인의 관심은 물질적인 부의 축적에만 쏠리게 된다. 인생의 가능성을 물질로 측정하려는 태도는 1차 대전을 계기로 1920년대에 와서 극에 달하게 된다. 그 결과로 당시의 미국인은 진정한 삶의 목적은 상실한 채 소비와 쾌락의 추구에만 몰두 하면서 사회에 부패와 타락을 만연케 하였다. The Great Gatsby에서 Fitzgerald는 타락해버린 물질주의의 세계에서 이상을 추구하다 파멸하는 Gatsby의 일생을 다루었다. 그가 Daisy를 통하여 얻고자 하였던 영원한 미와 젊음의 추구는 초기 미국인들이 가졌던 낙원을 향한 이상과 맥락을 같이 하는 것이라 할 수 있다. 또한 그가 이상을 물질로써 성취시키려 함은 인생의 행복을 세속적 부의 축적정도를 가지고 측정하려는 미국문명의 물질추구 경향과 연관된다고 하겠다. 이상이나 생의 확고한 목표가 없이 자신들이 소유한 막대한 부의 힘에만 의존하여 이기적인 삶을 살아가는 Tom과 Daisy, 그리고 정신적인 황무지인 Valley of Ashes는 역사가 흐름에 따라 잔혹하며 타락한 모습으로 변한 물질주의를 보여준다 하겠다. Gatsby가 Tom과 Daisy에 의해 배반당하며 Wilson에 의해 죽음을 당하는 것은 1920년대에 와서 미국의 이상이 타락한 물질에 의해 패배당한 것을 의미한다. 그러나 Fitzgerald는 Gatsby의 꿈의 실패에도 불구하고 그의 도덕적 우월성을 인정하면서 이상을 향한 추구의 가치를 높이 평가하게 된다. 그리하여 Nick을 서부로 돌아가게 함으로써 Gatsby로 계승되어 온 미국의 이상주의가 Nick에 의해 지속되게 한다. 이로써 Fitzgerald는 이상을 향한 노력이 당시의 현실에서는 성취 될 수 없다 하더라도 맥락은 끊어지지 않고 미래의 미국인의 삶에 계속 영향을 미칠 것임을 보여주고 있다.;The Great Gatsby is the most representative novel of the Lost Generation, which deals with the theme of the betrayal of American idealism by ruthless materialism. In this paper it is attempted to analyze the dialectic relationship of these two factors through the pursuit of Gatsby's romantic dream. Idealism and materialism has been the major dynamics of American civilization since the very beg inning of the American history. The one is defined to be the belief that earthly paradise can be created in the New American Continent. The other is represented in seeking the material opportunity. Though these two motives seemed to be irrelevant to each other, uneasy combination of these forces could be found through out the frontier age. Since America was industralized and urbanized after the Civil War, the purpose of living of most Americans was increasingly centered on money. This trend has been flowed down to the Jazz Age. In the twenties the tendency of material pursuit was more dominant than that of ideal seeking. As the result of their preference for secular materials, moral collapse and the absence of social responsibility were revealed in the whole society. People were indulged in conspicious consumption and hedonistic pleasure without any concern about the spiritual aspects. This was the age marked with the decline of the American idealism. Gatsby represented the American idealism by his faith in the promise of life and his belief that he could have an earthly paradise in the future. Tom and Daisy stood for the corruptible materialism with their carelessness and ruthlessness. The Valley of Ashes was described as an allusion of the spiritual barrenness and moral failure of the Jazz Age. Gatsby's dream to regain the love with Daisy was destroyed by the viciousness of Tom and Daisy and he was killed by Wilson in the end. His loss of illusion and his death symbolized the American idealism was defeated by the corruptible materialism. In spite of Gatsby's failure, the author valued his incorruptible dream because it could be an ultimate immunity from corruption and it could redeem the human spirit from the cheapness and vulgarity In this respect it was regarded that Fitzgerald treated the subject of idealism and materialism that made the American civilization well. For that reason he had the firm place in the American literary tradition.
