(The) Tempest, Richard Ⅲ에 나타난 人間本質 硏究

Abstract

The Tempest는 Prospero의 마법의 섬이라는 환상적이고 원시적인 자연환경을 배경으로해서, 인간계급의 最高峰인 王에서부터, 半人半獸의 Caliban에 이르기까지, 다양한 계층의 등장인물들을 통하여 人間 本性의 진면목을 볼 수 있는 작품이며, Shakespeare가 비극 작품에서는 해결하지 못했던, 이 세상의 불가사의한 갈등과 모순성을 극복하고자 하는 의지가 담겨져 있는 작품이다. 따라서, 本 論文에서는 등장인물들이 엮는 대립양상이나 인물 自身의 겉과 속의 양면성을 고찰하여봄으로써 인간의 본질적 측면인 肉과 靈의 世界를 고찰하고자하며, 궁극적으로는, The Tempest에서 초 자연적이고 神的인 존재로 등장하는 Prospero가 어떠한 방법으로 인간구원의 길을 제시하고 있는가를 밝혀 보려한다. 이러한 연구를 위하여, Richard Ⅲ 라는 Shakespeare의 초기 史劇作品을 병행하여 연구하였는데, 그 이유는, 이 극의 주인공 Richard와 The Tempest에서의 Antonio, Sebastian이 왕위 찬탈을 위해 형을 살해하려는 공통적 동기를 갖고 있고, 인간의 겉과 속의 양면성이 뚜렷하게 부각된 작품이란 점에서 比較作品으로 선정하게 되었다. 연구 방법에 있어서는 Image 연구가 극의 해석에 도움이 되고 劇에 포함된 정서를 충분히 느낄 수 있다는 論據에 따라, The Tempest에서는, 劇의 구성과 주제에 관련된 소리 이미지를 분석하고자 하며 Richard Ⅲ에서는 對照 이미지를 통해, 등장인물의 個性에 접근하여 한다. 이어서, 등장인물들의 성격분석을 통하여 肉과 靈의 세계를 고찰하고자 하는데, 여기서 자연적 惡人인 Caliban과, 文明化된 惡人이라고 할 수 있는, Richard, Antonio, Sebastian의 대조를 통해 인간의 思考의 능력이 부정적 방향으로 쓰여졌을 때, 인간 구원의 방향과는 역행하고 있음을 기술하려고 하며, 인간 본성의 또 다른 측면인 자유와 구속의 문제도 다루고자 한다. 이상과 같은 고찰을 통하여 Shakespeare가 의식적이든 무의식적이든간에, 오늘날의 우리에게 전하고 있는 인간 본질에 대한 message를 感知해 보고, 아울러, 인간이 추구해야 할 最高善이 어떻게 표출되어 있는가를 밝혀보는 데에 이 연구의 意義가 있는 것이다.;The theme of The Tempest is the regeneration of human beings who once tried to destroy order with their treachery, hatred, lust, falsehood, and abuse of power. Accordingly, we can realize that Shakespeare has shown us the diversity of human instinct through this play. For that reason, I would like to approach the sources of vitality and the truth of man. So, the aim of this thesis is to explore both sides of human beings, namely, the confrontational aspect of spirit and flesh. Along with The Tempest, I have studied an early Shakespearean history play, Richard Ⅲ, because these plays have a common motive, to murder brothers to usurp sovereign power, but have different conclusions. As a method of research, I think that image study is very useful for understanding the contents and the feelings of the two plays. Therefore, I studied sound images in connection with the Plot or theme of The Tempest, and tried examining the contrast of images in Richard Ⅲ. Based on these imagery studies, I studied the lines of the characters, and ultimately, I tried to discoverhe the essence of human beings. A man has the faculty of thinking, which is the difference between man and beast. But, I have realized that this contemplative faculty creates a more dreadful aspect than primitive intrinsic man when it is used in wrong manner by comparing Richard and Caliban. As another human instinct, I briefly stated that a man is eager for freedom, but when he gets freedom he ironically wants to be restrained by something divine. Through all these studies, I found out that Shakespeare placed emphasis on the combination of spirit and flesh in humans, and, for the peaceful future, he displayed a desirable human position in the cosmos, through the character of Prospero in The Tempest.
