Abstract
The primary objective of the present study is to discuss two major approaches to English adverbs : the Generative Semantics and the Interpretive Semantics. The basic assumption of the Generative Semantics to the analysis of adverbs is that adverbs are generated by transformations from predicates of higher sentences. However, the basic assumption of the Interpretive Semantics to adverbs is that adverbs are generated in the deep structures. Lakoff is the first who has attempted a systematic account of English adverbs in terms of the Generative Semantics. In order to account for his assumption, Lakoff discusses the paraphrase relation between adverbs and corresponding adjectives, the relation between adverbs and questions, the relation between adverbs and negations, adverbs and pronominalization, and instrumental adverbs. However, his treatment of the subject shows a number of shortcomings. Especially, in his analysis of the paraphrase relation between adverbs and adjectives, he claims that many adverbs correspond exactly to adjectives that take predicate complements. But we have discovered many examples for which only curious paraphrases exist, and there are a lot of cases where a related adjective exists, but can not be used to form a convincing paraphrase. In the analysis of the relation between adverbs and questions, we have noticed that sentences containing adverbs have additional meanings beside the meaning Lakoff points out. Also, in the analysis of the adverbs and pronominalization, we have found some examples in which the pronoun 'it' replaces some constituent not to the preceding sentence. Against all these Generative Semantics accounts, R. S. Jackendoff proposes an alternative treatment of English adverbs called Interpretive Semantics. He claims that the notion of paraphrase between two sentences is not a concept available to transformation, but rather dependent on semantics. Thus, in this approach, adverbs are directly generated in the deep structures as lexical items. Then, the rules of Semantic Interpretation mark the paraphrase relations of sentences. The present paper concludes that the Interpretive Semantics is desirable device for English adverbs. However, the study indicates that the Interpretive Semantics is not a perfect one for English adverbs. Finally, I hope that this study will be some contribution to the study of English adverbs and a more comprehensive theory of English adverbs will be made in future.
