In general, King Lear has been regarded as one of William Shakespeare's gretest plays. The reasons are explained as follows. Shakespeare fills this play with vivid expressions, remarkable imagination and a deep understanding of human beings. Although Shakespeare did not observed all the principles of classical tragedies of Greece, the significant characteristics of them are described in his work, King Lear. That is, the profound questions of a human being, the fundamental questions of life, the challenge to the gods, and the isolation caused by it are shown well. The tragedy of Lear begins by his own misunderstanding and misjudgment about the two natures, the benignant nature and malignant nature. He does not understand the deep meaning of 'bond', when faithful Cordelia refers to it. He also knows neither himself nor the nature of his daughters. He also reveals other flaws in exiling Cordelia and Kent, showing perverse self-will, uncontrolled passion and ferocious egotism by not accepting faithful Cordelia and loyal Kent. By these tragic flaws, Lear brings about his own tragedy, and is exiled into the fierce storm, Lear who has these flaws, seems to be a child in terms of spirit. The scene of the storm plays an important role in this play. The storm can be regarded as Lear's fellow, expressing his inner suffering. At the same time, it also causes severe suffering for him, symbolizing the ingratitude of his malignant daughters. The storm strips Lear of his pretension, his folly and makes him realize the nature of things. And Lear has the affection for the whole mankind beyond self-pity. He learns humanity, charity, and repentance through suffering. Shakespeare universializes the ingratitude of Gonerial and Regan and the suffering of Lear by using the sub plot of Gloucester's experience. He also reinforces, and deepens the meaning of Lear's tragedy by it. Just as Lear finds reason in madness, so Gloucester learns to see in his blindness. Gloucester becomes 'a better man' who learns to be patient and free, through suffering as Lear becomes a great man through his suffering. Lear is born a 'new-being' through Cordelia's faithful love. He recovers from the suffering of madness, and attains spiritual growth and Cordelia's true love. But Shakespeare's tragic vision has Lear die with Cordelia's dead body in his arms, Lear shows the image of the tragic hero who does not lose his dignity and sublimity in front of severe suffering. Human beings have always faced the possibi1ity of the suffering. However, he can come out refined and noble through suffering. That is, a human being can have dignity, greatness and sublimity when he does not give in to the suffering even facing such a severe consequence as death. Lear's tragedy gives us the opportunity to think of the meaning of suffering in our days.;King Lear는 인간존재와 인생의 전반에 대한 궁극적인 관심과 심오한 문제가 잘 나타난 위대한 작품이다.
