George Herbert의 靈的 갈등 연구

Abstract

17세기 영국 詩壇의 主流를 이루는 형이상학파 시인들(Metaphysical Poets)은 Elisabeth시대에 범람했던 지나치게 화려하고 장식적인 문체와 정서 유발적인 표현을 하는 Petrarchan 전통에 대한 반발로 사실적이고 논리적이며 성숙한 知的 표현을 즐겨 사용하고 극적인 상상력을 구사하는 John Donne을 구심적으로 하는 시인들, 즉 George Herbert, Richard Crashaw, Henry King, Andrew Marvell, Thomas Traherne, Henry Vaughan, Abraham Cowley, John Cleveland등을 일컫는다. 이러한 형이상학파 시인들 가운데 George Herbert(1593-1633)는 Donne의 後期 종교시의 영향을 받아 다양하고 독창적인 기법을 사용하여 단순하고 친밀한 필치로 자신의 개인적인 종교적 체험을 시작품속에 훌륭히 재현하여 그의 시를 예술의 경지에 이르게 하였다. Herbert는 171편의 종교시를 담고 있는 유일한 시집인 The Temple을 남겼는데 그 속에서 그는 찬양을 드릴 가치가 있으며 무한한 사랑이신 하느님, 인간의 본성과 여러 모습 그리고 하느님과 인간의 올바른 관계를 표현하였다. 그런데 The Temple은 몇몇 교회 의식에 대한 시들, 또 성서적인 주제를 발전시킨 시들을 제외하고도 많은 시들이 Herbert자신의 靈的 自敍傳(spiritual autobiography)이라고 할 만한 내용을 담고 있다. 그가 죽음을 맞기 몇 주 전 The Temple의 원고를 Nicholas Ferrar에게 보내면서 쓴 서한에서 스스로 피력했듯이 그의 시작품들은 그가 하느님의 뜻에 완전히 복종하여 새 삶을 얻기 전 그가 겪은 하느님과 그의 영혼사이의 많은 靈的 갈등들의 모습이 표현되어 있으며 하느님을 올바르게 섬김으로써 비로소 완전한 자유를 찾았음을 보여 준다. 또한 Herbert늘 자신의 시가 많은 정신적 고통을 받는 사람들에게 보탬이 되는 유익한 것이 되기를 갈망했다. Herbert의 靈的 갈등들은 自愛, 自己 懷疑, 自我 受容의 단계로 궁극적인 해결을 모색하고 있다. 귀족으로서의 태생과 훌륭한 교육의 힘으로 자연스럽게 부여받고 꿈꾸었던 궁정으로의 진출에 대한 세속적인 야망의 좌절과 또한 항상 그를 괴롭혔던 병약함에 의해 포기할 수 밖에 없었던 자신의 이기적인 사랑과 하느님과의 올바른 관계를 깨닫지 못한 채 자신의 희망과 방법으로 살려고 하는 모습이 自愛의 단계에서 표현된다. 그 후 그는 자신의 의지로는 어찌할 수 없는 고뇌와 비애를 경험하면서 인간으로서의 罪의 인식과 자신의 무가치함과 무의미함을 절감한다. 그리고 하느님의 부르심에 의한 정신적 생활에서도 떳떳이 존재할 수 없음을 비탄하며 하느님의 은총과 사랑을 끊임없이 갈망하는 모습이 自己 懷疑의 단계에서 보인다. 그러나 이와같은 갈등들은 점차 고조되다가 마침내 自我 受容의 단계에서 하느님의 은총과 모든 허물을 포용하는 포괄적인 사랑의 힘으로 자신의 고뇌에 찬 불신을 종식시킨다. 그리하여 그는 하느님의 뜻에 완전한 복종과 찬양을 할 수 있게 되고 하느님의 사랑에 대한 믿음과 확신으로 자신을 가치있는 존재로 받아들이는 정신적인 안정과 자유를 얻게 되는 것이다. Herbert는 짧은 생애를 통하여 많은 작품을 남기지 못하였고 주제면에서도 종교시의 범주를 벗어나지 못하는 한계를 갖고 있다. 그렇지만 그의 시 속에 투영되는 종교적 체험은 다양한 시형의 사용과 평범하고 친근한 심상들을 통해 인간 Herbert의 內的 고뇌와 갈등들을 표출하였고 그 고뇌와 갈등들이 극복되는 모습은 우리의 공감을 자아낸다.;The purpose of this study is to elucidate The Temple, religious lyrics, written by Herbert. Herbert. who was a devout priest of the Church of England, tried to express the real meaning of divine love and grace through his poems. The Temple, generally accepted by many critics as his spiritual autobiography, is the symbolic record of his life and personal relationship with God. Herbert's poems, praised in his own time and resurrected in the nineteenth century after general neglect, have been valued chiefly for their piety and sincerity. But recent studies attempt to illuminate what Herbert is saying in accordance with poetic imagination and aesthetic motives. Although The Temple is a record of his religious thought, his poetry is as valuable to those who share none of his religious beliefs as to those who share them all. In fact, it is congruous with his life, and he is true to his actual experience and very sincere in expressing his feelings. In his poetic style, he tried to find the most effective method to express his theme, and he used various poetic and metrical forms, incessantly inventing them. Because of his repudiation of both religious cliche´ and intellectual self -absorption, he chose homely and familiar imagery and a conversational tone. Herbert is a poet, not simply a writer of devotional verse. His poetry was for him very largely a way of working out his conflicts. And he brought them into the daylight and tried to resolve them. It is in the wide application of Herbert's self-discovery that the value of poetry lies. Therefore, The Temple is regarded as his own sincere and intimate spiritual autobiography and a valuable poetic achievement, and Herbert is loved as one of the major poets of the seventeenth century in our time.
