Abstract
The studies on the education during the era of the Daehan Empire have hitherto dealt generally with the positive aspects, placing emphasis on the development of the modern education and the significance of the movement for national salvation through education. We are led to understand, through the historical records, that the mass media and the schools of the days inspired nationalism and developed an enlightenment campaign for the education of the masses and women. However, we can herdly conclude that the education of those days had positive aspects only; for in 'Shinsosul,' the new style of novel which reflected the then prevailing social morals, we observe, more often than not, the tendancy to confine the objectives and means of education to the individualistic interest, although there was a strong emphasis laid by the writers upon the will of the times to achieve national salvation through education. That is to say, there were both positive and negative aspects in the education during the period of the Daehan Empire. In this study, therefore, the positive aspects are studied through the newspapers such as Dok-rip Shinmun, Whang-sung Shinmun, Daehan-mail Shinbo and the negative aspects through 'Shinsosul' which represents the form of novels in those times. The reason for choosing the newspapers and novels as materials for analysis is that I thought the values and social mood of a contemporary era are well reflected in them and that, therefore, they would serve as an effective tool for the study on the educational views during the period of the Daehan Empire, which is the main subject of this study. Also, this study deals with the implications of the educational views of the era of the Daehan Empire in three categories, viz., nationalism, development of civilization, and women's education, because the education in those days placed emphasis on the preservation of the nation and modernization, and because those were the times when women's education emerged to be an active social issue.;지금까지 大韓帝國時代의 敎育에 관한 연구는 近代敎育의 展開 및 敎育救國運動의 意義를 강조하는 것과 같은 肯定的 側面의 것이 대부분이었다. 물론 당시의 言論機關과 學校 등에서 民族精神을 고취시키고, 民衆 및 女性의 敎育을 위한 啓蒙活動을 전개하였음은 歷史的 史料를 통해 主知할 수 있는 사실이다. 그러나 당시의 社會風俗圖가 반영된 新小說 등에서 敎育救國의 時代意志를 口號로 외치면서도 사실상 敎育의 目的과 手段을 個人的 關心에 限定시키는 경우가 자주 나타나는 것을 보면, 그 시대의 敎育을 肯定視할 수만은 없을 것같다. 말하자면 大韓帝國時代의 敎育은 肯定的 側面과 함께 否定的 側面도 아울러 지녔다고 볼 수 있는데 本 硏究에서는 이에 그 肯定的 側面은 「獨立新聞」, 「皇城新聞」, 「大韓每日申報」와 같은 民族言論紙를 통해서, 否定的 訓面은 그 시대의 代表的 小說形態인 新小說을 통해서 고찰하였다. 新聞과 小說을 分析資料로 한 이유는 한 시대의 價値觀 및 社會情況이 이들에 잘 나타나 있으므로, 本 硏究의 관심인 大韓帝國時代의 敎育觀 고찰에 有效하리라는 생각에서였다. 한편 本 硏究는 大韓帝國時代의 敎育觀을 民族主義的 側面, 文明開化的 側面, 女性敎育的 側面으로 나누어 고찰하였는데, 이는 당시의 敎育이 民族保全과 近代指向을 강조하고 있었고, 女性의 敎育이 본격적으로 社會的 問題로 대두되었던 時代的 特徵을 감안한 것이었다고 하겠다.
