현대 휄트조형에 관한 연구

Abstract

Chiefly as a kind of the necessaries of a nomadic life and as the earliest form of fabrics maden use of since the first human activities of grazing sheep, the 'felt' has been developed from generation to generation maintaining its close relationship, to human life from the time of the Neolithic age when the weaving arts had not been invented yet. The felt, however, has become encountered to modern age to receive some fair attention of ours, not merely as daily life implements for ornamental or practical uses, but as a unique manner of expression for creative arts. Especially the experimental spirits and unique expressional techniques of the felt makers who had acted with their dwelling in the districts of North America has given to us true measures of worth of felt, and also are worthy of our attention mainly in the respect that they have played a great role in the improvement of modern fabric arts. So when considering the trend of today, when the merit of the felt is highly acknowledged as a medium for a field of unique arts, we are duly requested to pay more consideration about it. Therefore this study put its emphasis on the research into the modern manner of expression in the felt and into its representative makers' world of creation to present a possibility of its development. In actually making works I have been driven into the wish to describe the nature recreated with my own reality, taking afflatus from a eave which had the mysterious images both of the remoteness and calmness of antiquity. To sum up, an approach to creation and betterment of new formativeness was attempted by putting it together as plastic figures making full use of such natures of it like softness and flexibility.;휄트(Felt)는 인류가 양을 방목하면서부터 만들기 시작한 최초의 직물형태이다. 직조기술이 발명되기 이전 신석기시대부터 인간생활과 밀접한 관계를 맺으며 주로 유목민의 생활필수품으로 개발되어 왔다. 그러나 현대에 와서 휄트는 장식적이고 실용적인 생활용구로서 뿐 아니라 창작예술의 독특한 표현양식의 하나로 주목을 받게 되었다. 특히, 1970년대 이후 북미를 중심으로 휄트 작가의 실험정신과 그 독특한 표현기법으로 현대 섬유예술에 미친 영향은 지극히 크다고 할 수 있다. 이렇듯 독창적인 예술의 매체로서 그 중요성이 인식되고 있는 현시점으로 볼 때 이의 보다 깊은 이해와 연구는 필연적인 과제라 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 현대 휄트의 표현양상과 대표적인 작가들의 작품세계를 연구하여 휄트의 개발과 가능성을 제시하는데 중점을 두었다. 본인의 실제 작품제작 과정에서는 고요하면서도 태고의 신비로움을 간직하고 있는 동굴로부터 영감을 얻어 본인의 실체(reality)로서 재창조된 자연을 묘사하려 하였다. 얇은 휄트의 특성인 유연성과 탄력성을 이용하여 부조적 형태로 조립함으로써 새로운 조형성의 확대와 가능성을 창출하고자 하였다.
