Dubliners에 나타난 Joyce의 애정관

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine and describe various aspects of love-relationships among the characters in Dubliners which are invariably warped by the living conditions. Needles to say, James Joyce's Portraiture of love in Dubliners is closely related to the particular social milieu of Dublin, which is often characterized as 'paralysis' under the pressure of economy, the depravity of religion and corrupt politics. The love-relationship is diversified : The parental relation to the beloved daughter and son as seen in "The Sisters," "An Encounter," "Araby," and "Eveline" ; the exclusive love toward the tangible not spiritual in "After the Racer"; the love of a cruel father to his son in "Counterparts"; the vainglorious mother's love toward her daughter in "A Mother"; the deceptive love between young man and woman in "Eveline" and the love paralized by the power of materialism in "Two Gallants" and "The Boarding House"; love-failure of a single woman and a man in "Clay" and "A Painful Case", respectively; and finally the love between man and wife in "A Little Cloud," One may observe in these works Joyce's negative, rather pessimistic view of love in the human relationships. though one finds that in his final work, "The Dead," Joyce's attitude toward love is significantly shifted from negative to positive. The implication is that the works prior to "The Dead" can be said to be a precursor of Joyce's humanitarian stance. The particular attitude of Joyce, from the view of at least the tone of the works may be explained either by his unique style or by means of his hidden purpose in writing these works. Regardless of his being a realist or satirist, one may safely assume that the dismal aspects of love-relationships revealed in the interaction of the characters have finally wound up in a positive world of "The Dead," It is emblematic of Joyce's firm belief in permanence of human integrity and resilience. For this reason one may consider Joyce an artist-moralist as he himself declared in his letter to Grant Richards on May, 5th, 1906. Perhaps Joyce tried to on lighten the populace by showing what love is and lead them to the point where they can see where they are and what they ought to do at such particular period of their life time in Ireland.;본 논문에서는 Dubliners에 나타난 여러 인물들간의 애정관을 검토해 보았다. James Joyce가 Dubliners에서 묘사하는 Dublin시민들의 애정관은 그들이 처한 특수한 사회상 즉 정치적 타락, 경제적 붕괴 그리고 종교적 부패로 인해 마비되어 버린 Dublin과 관련되어 불건전한 기형적 양상을 띠고 있다. "The Sisters" "An Encounter," "Araby" 에는 성인들의 도덕적 타락에 의해 좌절된 소년들의 심리 상태를 표현하고 있고 "Eveline," "Counterparts"에는 난폭한 아버지와 학대받는 자식과의 관계가 그려지고 있으며 "After the Race ", "A Mother"에는 애정의 결여가 자식을 허영의 도구로 삼는 무모한 부모로 인해 연유되는 과정이 묘사되고 있다. 미혼 남녀간의 그릇된 애정관을 노출 시킨 " Eveline," " Two Gallants " "The Boarding House" 에 이어 " Clay " 와 " A Painful Case" 에는 두 독신 남녀의 황량한 삶의 모습이 그려지고 있다. 기혼 남녀를 다루고 있는 " A Little Cloud " 와 " The Dead " 에는 부부간의 이해 단절로 인한 완전한 애정의 상실 상태가 제시되어 있다. 이러한 측면에서 볼 때 정신적으로 마비된 Dublin 사회에서는 인간 상호간의 교류는 단절되고 그들이 엮어내는 인간 관계도 기형적이며 인간과 사회 질서의 근본이 되는 애정은 존재하지 않는다. 따라서 Dubliners에 제시된 애정관은 부정적인 모습이다. 그러나 Joyce는 Dubliners의 마지막 단편 " The Dead "에서 이기주의와 우월감에 가득 차 있던 주인공의 통렬한 자기 이해를 통하여 보다 긍정적이고 진실한 인간애를 보여 준다. 결국 Joyce가 추구한 것은 단순한 인간 상호간의 이해와 애정보다는 보다 더 넓고 깊은 인류애임을 Dubliners를 통하여 간접적으로 시사하고 있다.
