대지의 이미지를 형상화한 종이조형

Abstract

Nature has stimulated boundless emotion within man and has served as a source of creative power in his life. The sincere artist ought to search nature for its ultimate truths to enable him to express nature's innermost forms, to understand it, and to recreate it according to its own laws. This study has attempted to create expressions of Mother Earth, gained through direct observation, in art forms. Man, as a transitory form of nature that appears and passes away in time, lives inseparably intertwined with nature. In light of that, Mother Earth ought not to be the object of human possession or conquest but, rather, the "Mother" to abundantly fill our needs. As man has given reverence to the star-filled heavens, so has he expressed the strong affections of love, desire, and distress toward Mother Earth. This study, based upon investigations into literary research, has considered the diverse images of Nester Earth in art, paying special attention to the trends within contemporary art (including painting). I have also investigated the expression of images of Mother Earth in the field of fabric art, concentrating upon the "paper artists." Against the background of the theoretical inquiry into nature mentioned above, I have attempted to express the images of Mother Earth by means of the medium of paper. I hypothesized that the medium of paper can arouse deep human emotions empathetic with Mother Earth's own vitality. Paper, with its semitransparent quality, has a breathing-like quality that naturally permits the circulation and passing of air through it. In conclusion, I have attempted to express the subtle feelings of Mother Earth through teh medium of "paper," not merely as a handicraft but, also, as an expression of emotion. I hope to have contributed to the creation a new kind of "language" in which the medium of paper is used of display the close connections between the human mind and human society while reflecting, at the same time, the transcendent dimension of human life.;자연은 인간에게 무한한 감동을 주며 창작 활동의 원동력이 되어왔다. 진정한 예술가라면 모름지기 자연의 궁극적인 진리로 파고 들어가 내적인 형태를 창조하고 자연을 이해하며 자연의 법칙에 따라 작업으로써의 재창조를 가능케 하여야 한다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 자연의 영역 중에서 대지(大地)에 대한 구체적 관찰을 통해 이를 한 예술 형태로써의 표현을 시도하였다. 인간은 대지의 정연한 질서 속에서 생성되고 소멸되어지는 한 생명체로서 인간과 대지는 분리할 수 없는 깊은 유대 관계를 형성하고 있다. 즉 대지는 소유나 정복의 대상이 아니라 우리 인간과 더불어 존재함으로써 오히려 우리들의 삶을 직접·간접적으로 풍요롭게 해주는 어머니와도 같은 존재인 것이다. 과거로부터 하늘에 대한 인간의 절대적 믿음이 있어 왔듯이 대지에 대하여서도 인간의 애착과 고뇌는 여러 방법과 형태를 통해서 표현되어져 왔다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 대지의 다각적 이미지를 여러 문헌을 통한 객관적 인식을 토대로 순수 회화에서의 표현과 현대미술의 한 부류인 설치미술에서의 흐름을 살펴보고, 섬유예술 분야에서도 종이 작가를 중점으로 연구·관찰해 보았다. 이러한 대지에 대한 이론적 배경을 통해 연구자는 대지의 이미지를 종이라는 매체를 통하여 표현하고자 한다. 종이는 그 재료가 지니고 있는 반투명성 즉, 외부의 공기를 자연스럽게 순환시켜 줄 수 있는 호흡하는 생명력을 지니고 있다는 점에서 대지의 생명력과 일치되고 깊은 감흥을 불러일으킬 수 있다고 생각한다. 연구자는 이러한 종이작업이 인간의 정신적, 사회적 생활전반과 밀접한 연관을 가지고 있으면서도 동시에 현실의 生을 초탈한 독립된 조형언어로서의 존재임을 재인식시키고자 한다.
