패턴에 의한 페이퍼 메이킹의 연구

Abstract

인간은 자연속에서 아름다움을 꾸준히 발견해 왔으며 그 대상이 자연물이든 인공적으로 만들어진 것이든 간에 조형적 표현을 통해서 인간의 문화적 욕망을 충족시켜 왔다. 즉 인류 사회가 구성된 이후 인간의 윤리 의식이 진전된 것과 마찬가지로 자연 속의 미를 인식하였던 인간은 미적 표현을 위한 문화로 승화시켜 개발시켰고, 인간의 변화되는 무의식에 따라 개선되고 변모를 거듭해온 것이다. 여기서 중요한 미적 요소인 패턴은 사물과 결합되어 양식화 됨으로써 인간의 상징성을 표현하는 대안으로서 존재하여 왔다. 이러한 미의식의 징표로서 사물과 결합되어온 패턴은 일반적 의미에서 볼 때 '반복되거나 상응되는 부분들의 미적인 배열'을 뜻하게 되며 보다 거시적인 관점에서는 자연과 인공물의 역사에서 발견되는 외양의 양식이자 나아가서는 인간과 사물간의 관계를 표상하는 관점으로써 의미한다. 자연에 대한 주술적인 의미로부터 비롯된 원시시대의 패턴과 그 후 동기를 살펴 볼 때 미감에 부응하는 장식으로서 존재하였던 패턴은 모터니즘(modernism)에 의해 배제되어 그 역할이 경시되었으나, 최근 후기 모던 (Post-modern)이후 재등장하게 되어 사물과의 관계에 있어서 불가피한 속성임을 재확인하게 되었다. 한편 너무나 일반화되고 보편화되었던 종이는 지식과 미적 행위를 담지하는 매재로써 이용되었을 뿐 그 자체의 사물로서는 무시되었으나 20세기 이후 종이를 만드는 일 자체가 미술 행위의 하나로 자리잡게 되었다. 이러한 과정에서 섬유 재료로서 종이의 특성이 부각 된 것은 당연한 일이였다. 본 연구자의 작품은 이러한 수제 종이작업에 의한 자연의 패턴을 접목시켜 창출해내는 것이며 결국 패턴과 종이작업이 불가분의 관계가 되어 일체화되는 전 과정을 보여주려 하였다. 즉 일체화된 자연과 인간의 융화를 뜻하며 작품은 그것을 암시하는 상징으로서 작업에 임하였다.;The purpose of this paper is to investigate the papermaking through the pattern, and how it is being used. In doing so we will probe into the role artists from the past have played in influencing today's major artists. Human has always been contact with many things, whether natural or artificial. And, their consciousness toward the beauty is the nature of life as a kind of transcendental human spirit. Man has discovfered the beauty from the nature and applied to make things. The trend of modern crafts emphasized their formative arts character more than their utility. The natural itself, and at thee same time they seek for the various modes of expressions by exploring the development of unique techniques. From this point of view, the softness and inherent qualities of paper-which is composed of natural fibers-make a fresh and strong appeal because paper enables to work in diverse ways. "Pattern" has been combined with the things as an indication of such sense of beauty, and means the artistic arrangement of corresponding parts. Also, it has kipt the tremendous functions as the support of human knowledge after it was invented. Turning to the practical creative activities for this thesis, first of all, the structure of my work in paper is formed by yipping and collaging. The process of fragmentation and reassembly has remained constant. Having spent several years making paper-hundreds and hundreds of sheets-and then spending even more time tearing those sheets into small pieces, I tilted a whole series excess as a comment on my own artistic activities. I am interested in that quality of the human mind that forms and encapsulates information in remarks, shapes and language so that know-ledge transcends the mortality of individuals. My work reflects an interest in forming and patterning paper. It is usually decorated with a simple repeated motif, often a lot. I like direct physical movement and the irregularities that occur with stamping. Both the examination of theoretical backgrounds and the analysis of practical activities for this thesis set forth the following conclusions. First the development of "Object" conception, handmade paper itself which is a producted by an artist for a specific purpose has become to be considered a work and furthermone a new genre of paper formative art. Second, paper formative art is very significant in that, it has brought back humanity by the participating of "Hand" in paper works. Third, I have found many good possibilities of works using paper as a medium of formative art by its excellent characteristics, fine effects of dyeing, good plasticity. Along with these conclusions, I hope that paper formative art will be a bridge between and fine arts and crafts.
