Abstract

일찌기 Graham Greene은 인간을 위한 완벽한 체제나 제도란 존재하지도 않으며 사회체제의 개혁만으로는 인간 세상에 난무하는 부정과 불의, 폭력과 악은 사라지지 않음을 간파하였다. 인간자체 내의 속성이 변하는 않는 한 인간에 내재하는 악과 부조리는 소멸되지 않는다. Greene은 그의 작품 "The Power and the Glory"에서 이러한 인간속성에 한없는 연민과 동정을 느끼면서 주인공 Whisky 사제를 통해 "The world is unhappy whether you're rich or not - unless you are a saint."라고 단정함으로써 그 해결책을 종교의식에서 찾으려 했다. 그가 주장하는 종교의식은 단순히 카톨릭교의 포교나 혹은 교회의 가르침에 따라 행동해야 하는 정통적 신앙을 의미함이 아니라 개인의 종교적 체험에 의한 확신을 의미 한다. Greene이 보는 악의 세계는 선과 악의 대립의 개념에서 오는 악이 아니라 선을 실현할 수 있는 전제적 상황으로서 종교성을 부여받게 된다. 즉 인간세계의 죄악은 현실의 고통을 바탕으로 신의 존재를 확인하고자 하는 전제 과정으로 보고 불행하고 고통스런 존재조건에서 신의 목적성을 찾게 된다는 뜻이다. "The Power and the Glory"의 Whisky사제는 위대하면서도 모순과 약점을 지닌 나약한 인간이다. 그러나 그의 인간적 잘못과 죄과도 그의 위대성 못지 않게 깊은 감명을 준다. 그는 신 또는 절대적 존재를 부정하고 폐쇄된 사회의 틀 속에서 겪는 고뇌와 모순, 좌절을 딛고 도달하는 절정과 인간으로서의 한계를 보여준다. Greene은 기나긴 방황 끝에 도달한 사제의 긍정적 사고와 뉘우침을 통한 인간적 희생과 사랑, 그리고 그러한 희생과 사랑에 감동되어 변화하는 이웃에 인류의 희망을 걸고있다. 인간과 인간사이의 이해와 사랑, 즉 인간의 선한 행위가 신의 선한 의도인 은총을 실현하는 힘이 된다는 것을 강조함으로써 Greene의 계속적인 관심사인 인간에 대한 이해와 사랑이 곧 신을 사랑하는 것임을 보여주고 이로써 인간에 대한 이해와 사랑이 악과 부조리로 가득 찬 현실세계에 희망적 미래를 약속하는 원동력이 됨을 일깨워 준다.;Graham Greene was convinced that there was neither perfect system nor organization veritably designed for human beings, and as a result, he believed that malicious wrong-doings, injustices, violences and evils cannot be eradicated by implementing a mere change in social system, as long as basic attributes of human beings are associated to evil and injustice. In his book "The Power and the Glory", expressing his endless pity or sympathy to these negative attributes of human beings, Greene tries to look for the solution of human problems through religious senses by saying that "The world is unhappy whether you are rich or not unless you are a saint." The religious senses which Greene emphasizes do not mean mere propagandism of Catholicism or the traditional religious belief of Catholic church but a conviction that can be established by undergoing religious experience with full faith. The evil seen by Greene is not from the world filled with uncompromising confrontation between evil and good but from religious points of view as a creative lead toward good. Therefore, evil in the human society means a preliminary condition to acquire the objectives set by God in unhappy and painful circumstances under which they are positioned through a process of searching for the truth of God's existence in the sea of suffering pains. The priest in "The Power and the Glory" is not only a great man but also a sinful man with contradictions and basic human weaknesses. However, his mistakes and sins are equally impressive as forcefully as his greatness. In the closed society which denies God or absolute being, he demonstrates the limit of human beings and the triumph by overcoming agony and frustration with his own conviction for the love of God. Greene visualizes an emerging sign of hope through the priest's positive thinking, generous sacrifices, love after long suffering and frustration, and neighbors touched and changed by the priest's virtue. Emphasizing that the understanding, love and virtue in human society can only be the divine sources which realize the wishes and grace of God, Greene demonstrates us that the understanding and love for others mean love for God and also prime power to create the promising future for the human society infected with sins and despair.
