David Hockney의 회화에 있어 내용과 상징적표현에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 상징적 표현과 심리적 이미지의 형상화를 통하여 관객과의 직접적인 교류를 시도하였던 데이비드 허크니(David Hockney)에 관한 연구이다. 허크니는 추상표현주의가 환영받던 시대에 회화의 형식과 함께 주제의 내용에 많은 비중을 둠으로써 형식과 내용의 균형을 이루었다. 작품의 주제에 있어 작가 자신과의 친밀한 관계를 구축하였으며 초기 인물화에서는 영국의 하위문화로서 공공연히 드러나고 있었으나 보편적인 성문화로 받아들여지지 않던 동성애의 보편성을 지향하는 주제의 작품을 제작하였다. 동성애라는 다소 파격적인 주제를 화면속에 형상화시키는 과정에서 구체적인 상황의 묘사와 함께 상징적인 요소를 구성하였던 허크니는 문학가인 월트 휘트먼(Walt Whitman)이 고안해낸 숫자 코드를 자신의 작품에 삽입하여 특정인물을 암시하는 방법으로 사용하였으며, 숫자코드 외에도 음악적 기호, 문학 작품에서 인용한 단어와 문장등의 상징적인 언어를 이용하여 자신의 감정과 생각들을 효과적으로 표현해내었다. 문학에 대하여 지대한 관심을 보였던 허크니는 시와 소설의 바탕아래에서 작품을 제작하였으며, 더 적극적인 방법으로써 문학작품이 가지는 서술적인 기능을 자신의 작품에 담아내는 서술적 성격의 회화와 판화를 제작하였다. 캘리포니아로의 이주를 분기점으로 하여 허크니의 작품은 자연주의적인 경향을 띄게 된다. 두 명의 친근한 관계에 있는 인물들을 화면에 배치하여 인물간의 관계를 상징적으로 담아낸 이 시기의 이인 초상화에서 자연주의적 양식은 '관계'라는 심리적 바탕을 가지고 인물을 표현하면서 작품 속에서 그것을 융합시키는데 적절하게 사용된다. 이인 초상화에서 허크니가 나타내려한 주제는 관계를 갈망하는 인간의 근본적인 욕망과 외로움의 갈구라는 양극성이며 인물의 시점과 환유적인 정물을 이용하여 작품과 작가 자신간의 직접적 관계를 구성하였다. 이인초상화에서는 주제와의 관계와 함께 공간적인 연속성으로서의 작품과 작가간의 관계를 구축하였는데 허크니는 원근법의 체계를 이용하여 예술가를 작품의 연속선상에 존재하도록 하였으며, 그러한 과정에서 관객을 작품속에 포함 시켰다. 이와같이 허크니는 추상 표현주의와 팝 아트 그리고 현대 인물회화의 양식을 작품속에 융화시키고 작가 자신과 친밀한 관계를 이루는 주제들을 다양한 방법으로 형상화 시켰다. 또한 허크니는 자신만의 독특한 조형 언어를 개발하여 관객들을 작품의 한 부분으로 끌어들이고 자신의 경험을 함께 공유 할 수 있도록 유도하여 관객과의 깊은 공감대를 형성하였다.;This study is on painting of David Hockney, who tried to build a direct relationship with viewers through formalization of symbolism and mental image. Hokney has made a kind of balance in his painting between forms and contents by emphasizing contents of the subject matter as well as forms of paintings, in the period of abstract expressionism. In the subject matter of works, he has built the intimate relationship with himself. And in his early portraits he emphasized the universality of homo-sexuality which revealed itself as sub-culture in England but was not accepted as the universal culture. Hokney used the symbolic elements with the concrete representation of figures to express the exceptional subject matter, the homo-sexuality. In this case, he introduced the numerical 'secret' code, which invented by Walt Wheitman. And he effectively expressed his emotion and ideas using symbolic language, such as musical symbols, phrases and sentences consulted in the literary works. Hockney, having an interest in the literature, has made works under the basis of poems and fictions, and has constructed paintings and prints of descriptional character which put the narrative painting, which the literary works have, into his works as the positive way. At the turning point of moving to California, Hockney's works have inclined to have the naturalism. In the double portraits which express the relation of figures by positioning two intimate figures by the scene, the naturalism was used in mixing 'relationship' in the works by expressing figures with the mental basis of 'relationship'. In the double portrait, the subject matter, which Hockney intended to express, was the dualism, that is, the original human desire for the relation and the thirst for the loneliness. Hockney 's portraits have constructed an intimate relationship between the subject and the artists. At first conceptually through the numerical 'secret' code, later through the use of point-of-view and finally, through metonym. By use of a complicated perspectival system, they have created a special continuity between the artist and the scene and, as such, have implicated the viewer within that process. In the double portraits, Hockney has built the relationship between works and himself as the spatial continuity with the relation with the subject matter, and has made the artist in the line of works using perspective and he has contained the viewers in the process the structure of in his works. Hockney showed various the styles in his works by use of his unique method, for example revised abstract expressionism, pop-art and modem portrait. And he has formalized the subject matter, which built the intimate relationship with himself, by the various method. Also Hockney has developed the unique formative language to bring viewers into a part of his works. And he has introduced them to hold his experience in common to form the deep sympathy with viewers.
