Keith Haring의 Graffiti 회화를 응용한 의상디자인 연구

Abstract

인간의 욕구는 문명이 발달함에 따라 다양해지고 그에 상응하여 예술의 영역을 확대, 개척하고 있다. 현대 조형예술은 전통적 사고에 얽매이지 않고 새로운 소재 및 표현 방법으로 그 표현 영역은 점차 확대해 가고 있다. 의상 디자이너들 또한 현대 조형예술과 상호 보완적 관계를 유지하면서 그 영역을 넓혀 가고 있다. 의상은 그 시대의 상황을 적절히 반영하고, 새로운 아이디어로 소비자들이 요구하는 상품이 되어 실생활에 적응되며, 인간과 밀접한 관계를 형성해 나간다. 또한 조형예술과 접목을 시도해가고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 20세기의 한 양상으로서 대중적이고 대량화된 미국의 문화를 뉴욕시의 지하철과 역들, 도시의 벽에 글과 그림, 기호로 표현했던 그라피티 작가인 키스 해링(Keith Haring) 작품의 특징을 의상에 도입하였다. 만화를 연상시키는 단순하고 장난스러운 상징적 도상들과 기호로 표현된 선과 원색을 사용하여 즉각적이며 강렬한 색감으로 표현한 키스 해링 작품의 조형성을 의상에 응용함에 있어서 다양한 퀼팅 혼합기법으로 현대의상 디자인에 새로운 도입을 시도하였다. 이는 현대 의상의 표현영역을 확대하고 고부가가치의 의상을 창출하는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 방법과 범위의 이론적 배경으로는 키스 해링의 작품세계와 그라피티(Graffiti) 회화에 대해 고찰하였다. 또한 현대의상 디자인에 응용된 자료를 수집하여 분석하였으며 퀼팅의 표현소재와 기법은 문헌자료와 사진수집을 통해 분석하였고, 현대의상과 예술의상에 나타난 퀼팅의 자료를 수집, 분석하였다. 이를 토대로 총 8점의 의상을 제작하였다. 본 연구의 작품제작은 키스 해링의 그라피티 작품의 원초적인 선의 형태와 색채 등을 조형적으로 재구성하고 퀼팅 기법에서 소재와 기법을 응용하여 디자인하였다. 혼합 표현기법으로는 올밀기 기법, 컷팅 기법, 비드 워크 등을 퀼팅 기법과 함께 사용하였다. 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 키스 해링의 작품은 인간의 즉흥적이고 원초적인 도상과 장난스러운 선으로 현대의 여러 조건들과 내면세계를 표현하였다. 그것을 다른 사람과 공유하려는 점에서 사회의 대중규범에 따르면서도 자기만의 개성을 나타내고자 하는 인간의 두 가지 욕구를 충족시킬 수 있었다. 또한 대중과의 커뮤니케이션의 수단으로 쓰였고, 월트 디즈니와 앤디 워홀의 영향을 받았고, 매스미디어 이미지를 도상화하여 대중적인 특징을 가졌다. 이러한 키스 해링의 그라피터 회화는 새로운 것을 추구하려는 문화의 흐름에 맞추어 현대 의상에 응용할 가치가 있음을 확인하였다. 둘째, 자유로운 의식을 가진 키스 해링의 그라피티 회화는 만화를 연상시키는 유희적이고 상징적인 도상들의 그림과 간략한 기호에서 나타난 조형적인 특징들은 자유롭고 개성을 추구하는 이미지의 현대의상의 모티브로 응용하기에 적합하였다. 셋째, 키스 해링 회화의 색채는 주로 검정과 흰색을 사용하여 문자나 선으로 형상화하였고 강한 원색대비의 색상이 주를 이루어서 모던한 이미지 표현에 적합하였다. 넷째, 의상의 재질감의 표현에 있어서 펠트, 거즈, 실크, 본딩, 벨벳, 소가죽, 링클 오간자 등을 사용하여 퀼팅 함으로써 질감이 풍부한 직물 표면 위에 직물 밀도의 대비, 퀼팅 박음선에 음영과 요철 효과를 이용하여 유희적인 선을 효과적으로 표현할 수 있었다. 올 밀은 거즈와 펠트, 링클 오간자를 사용하여 퀼팅 기법은 회화적인 이미지의 표현으로 적합하였다. 또한 키스 해링 회화를 표현하기 위해 펠트에 올 밀기 기법, 컷팅 기법, 퀼팅 기법을 함께 사용하여 자유로운 선의 형태를 부조적 질감과 회화적인 이미지로 표현 할 수 있었고 본딩 소재, 가죽을 퀼팅하여 만화적인 도상들을 현대적인 이미지로 부각시킬 수 있었다. 이와 같이 그라피티를 의상에 응용하는 것은 표현의 잠재된 가능성을 자각시켜 줌으로써 새로운 의상 표현에 있어서 예술적이고 독창적인 디자인 개발을 모색하는데 그 의의를 두었다. 또한 퀼팅 기법의 응용을 통하여 새로운 소재와 기법의 연구가 이루어지기를 기대하며, 그라피티가 가진 유희적이고 만화적인 형태와 원색대비가 강한 색채조화는 현대의상의 조형예술로서 갖는 창조적 가능성의 지속적인 연구가 확대되어 이루어지기를 기대한다.;Human desires get diversified as civilization develops, and they expand and exploit the domains of art. Modern modelling art is expanding its area of expression with new materials and expression methods without being fixed on traditional thoughts. Clothing designers are also expanding their territories by maintaining interactional relationship with modern modelling art. Clothes properly the situation of an age, and they are applied to real life becoming products demanded by consumers, and they form close relationship with human beings. Also, designers are trying to apply them to modelling art. Hereby, this study makes a new attempt to apply the modelling character of Keith Haring's work using the simple, funny and symbolic characters, symbolized lines and primary colors that remind us Keith Haring's work, which express popular and massive culture of America such as urban subways and their stations, urban paintings and drawings on the wall as paradigm of the 21st century. This study is aimed at expanding the expression scope of modern clothing and creating high value-added clothes. The theoretical background og this study includes Keith Haring's work and his graffiti painting. I examined graffiti painting and analyzed its data applied to modern clothing design. Also, I analysed expression material and technique of quilting through photo collection, and I also collected and analysed data on quilting presented in modern clothing and art clothing. Based on this analysis, I made total eight pieces of clothes. Making pieces of work for this study includes re-organizing instinctive form of lines and color, and designed using materials and technique of quilting. As mixing technique, I used pushing ply, cutting and bid work as well as quilting. The result of this study is summarized as follows. First, Keith Haring's work expresses various conditions of modern times and inner world using improvisatory and instinctive characters and intriguing lines of human beings. In the sense of sharing this with other people, human beings can satisfy the two desires of following social norms and presenting their own individuality. Also, Keith Haring's graffiti painting, which is means of communication with the public, influence by Andy Warhol, and characterization of mass media image, it confirmed to have value to be applied to modern clothing. Second, Keith Haring's graffiti painting, which has free spirit, reminds us of cartoon with symbols and signs, and those characteristics are good as the motive of modern clothing, and they could be expressed as the image of pursuing free and individualistic image. Third, Keith Haring's painting mainly use black and white, and it is formed as letters or lines, and they fir for modern clothes with the contrast of stong primary colors. In expressing material of clothing, I could effectively express Keith Haring's contrast of texture density, quilting sewing lines, shadows and unevenness effect by using felt, gauze, silk, bonding, velvet, cow leather and wrinkle oganza. For ply pushing, quilting is appropriate for painting image expression using gauze, felt and wrinkle oganza. Fourth, using felt by ply pushing and cutting as well as quilting, I could express Keith Haring's painting, and also emphasize cartoon-like characters by quilting leather and bonding materials. As written above, applying graffiti to clothes is meaningful in developing new clothing expression and artistic and unique design creation by recognizing potentioals of expression. Also, I hope the application of quilting to clothes will help study more on new materials and technique, and I also expect more studies on the cartoon-like and intriguing forms of graffiti will be conducted to find their potentials as modern clothing art.
