Donald Judd의 작품을 응용한 직물디자인 연구

Abstract

1960년대 전통적 관념과 추상표현주의 주관적 표현성에 대한 반발로서 출현한 미니멀리즘에서의 기하학적 형태는 시각적 체험을 즉각 유발시키는 매개체로서의 역할을 한다. 즉, 시각의 반응을 통하여 경험의 본질과 그 인지를 가능한 한 직접 체험하게 한다. 또한 표현의 최소화를 통해서 표현성의 극대화에 도달하는 미니멀 작가들은 외부적인 상황과 오브제에 대한 관심을 주위 환경에까지 돌리게 하는 아이디어의 발전을 낳았다고 볼 수 있다. 그리하여 현대미술이 다양한 생산에너지를 산출하게 되는 계기를 마련하였으며, 이러한 진보는 현대에 와서 음악, 문학, 무용, 디자인, 건축 등 여러 분야에까지 그 영향이 미치고 있다. 본 연구는 미니멀리즘의 대표적 작가인 도널드 저드(Donald Judd, 1928-1994)의 시각적으로 절제되고 단순한 구조로 형성된 기하학적 조형작업의 특징을 분석하여 직물디자인에 적용하였다. 연구방법으로는 첫째, 미니멀리즘의 기본적 개념과 생성 당시의 사회적, 미술사적 배경에 대해 연구하고 미니멀리즘에서의 기하학적 형태에 대해 고찰하였다. 둘째, 미니멀리즘의 대표적 작가 도널드 저드의 작품세계와 작품의 조형적 특성에 대해 연구하였다. 셋째, 이와 같은 이론적 배경을 토대로 저드의 작품에서 보여 지는 기하학적 형태, 반복적 배열방식, 다양한 색채의 특징을 응용하여 작품에 표현하였다. 넷째, 작품 제작에 있어서는 수직기를 사용하여 가장 기본적인 구조인 평직을 이용해 형식의 단순화와 조직의 최소화를 이루고자 하였다. 또한 차갑고 산업적인 금속사, 비닐사, 모노필라멘트사를 주재료로 사용하여 저드 작품의 재료적 특징인 금속적, 산업적 재료의 효과를 나타내고자 하였다. 본 연구자는 이러한 연구과정을 통하여 다음과 같은 결론을 도출하였다. 첫째, 저드 작품에서 동일한 형태로 된 단순한 기하학적 작품의 반복적 배치의 특징은 직물 디자인의 모티프로 사용하여 현대적 감각에 부합할 수 있는 새로운 형태의 패턴을 제시할 수 있었다. 둘째, 저드 작품에서 기하학적 형태의 반복적 배치와 함께 나타나는 다양한 색채들을 이용하여 직물의 제작에 있어 시각적인 다양함을 표현할 수 있었다. 셋째, 인레이(Inlay)기법을 이용해 제작된 작품Ⅰ과 작품Ⅱ의 기하학적 패턴들은 형식의 단순화와 조직의 최소화를 가져오며, 이러한 방법은 패턴의 크기와 위치를 자유롭게 구성할 수 있어 공간성과 부조적 표현을 효과적으로 전달 할 수 있었다. 넷째, 가장 기본적인 직조 조직인 평직의 사용은 환영의 극소화, 형식의 단순화와 조직의 최소화를 이루기에 적합하였다. 이중직(Double weaves)과 픽업(Pick-up) 이중직 기법으로 제직된 직물은 기하학적 패턴을 나타내기에 적합했으며, 밀도를 낮게 하고 가는 실로 상층과 하층의 색상을 각기 다르게 하여 다양하고 깊이감있는 색채의 조화를 나타낼 수 있었다. 이러한 결과로 투명함과 겹침의 효과를 동시에 가져오며 직물표현의 새롭고 다양한 가능성을 보여 주는 효과를 낳을 수 있었다. 다섯째, 저드 작품의 산업적, 금속적 재료의 효과를 나타내기 위해 사용한 차갑고 산업적인 소재의 재료들은 재료표현의 효과뿐 아니라 빛의 흡수와 반사에 따라 다양한 시지각적 흥미를 유발 시키고 환상적인 이미지를 자아낼 수 있었다. 여섯째, 저드의 기하학적 조형원리에 의해 이루어진 형태적 완성미와 조형성이 직물디자인에 전개될 때 무한한 다양성을 가짐을 알 수 있었다.;The geometric form in minimalism which emerged in opposition to the traditional ideas of the 1960s and the subjective expressiveness of abstract expressionism plays the role as a medium of instantly inducing visual experience. That is, it gets us to experience the essence of the experience and the recognition as directly as possible through visual responses. It can be also seen that minimalist artists who reached the maximization of expressiveness through the minimization of expression gave birth to the development of the idea which had them turn external situations and their concern about object even to environment surrounding them. It provided for the motive that modern fine art got to produce a variety of production energies, and such an advance is affecting even several fields such as music, literature, dance, design, architecture and so on in the modern times. In this study, I have analyzed the characteristics of the geometric plastic working controlled visually and formed in simple structure of Donald Judd (1928-1994), a typical minimalist artist who enabled spectators to experience the essence in an instant form by reflecting such plastic elements minimally and reducing them to basic forms, and applied them to textile design. For theoretical methods of research, first, I have examined the basic concepts of minimalism and social background and the background in the history of fine art at the time when it was generated, and investigated into geometric forms in minimalism. Secondly, I have studied on the world and the plastic characteristics of works of Donald Judd who belongs to typical minimalist artists. Thirdly, Based on theoretical background like this, I have applied geometric forms which are shown in his works, repetitive methods of arranging them, and the characteristics of various colors, and expressed them in my work. Fourthly, In manufacturing my works, I tried to achieve formal simplification and structural minimization by using the most fundamental weaving of textile in which to weave weft and warp by interchanging them one by one through using a handloom. I wanted to show the effects of industrial materials in his works by using as main materials cold and industrial metallic thread, vinyl thread and mono -filament. The conclusions obtained from this study are as follows. First, I could present a new form of pattern which can correspond to modern senses by using as a motif of textile design the characteristics of the repetitive arrangement of simple geometric works in identical forms in his works. Secondly, I made it possible for the colors appearing with the repetitive arrangement of geometric forms in his works to express visual diversity in manufacturing textile. Thirdly, using the most fundamental weaving of .textile in which to weave weft and warp by interchanging them one by one was suitable to achieving formal simplification and structural minimization. The textile manufactured by using the techniques of double weaves and pick-up double weaves was appropriate for showing a geometric pattern, and effective for expressing various colors. It also gave birth to the effect of showing the effects of transparency and overlapping at the same time. Fourthly, using metallic thread of cold, industrial and thin material which was used for the purpose of not presenting any subjective and psychological expression but transparently presenting objective and neutral state true to appearance, film thread and semitransparent mono-filament was fit for indicating the effect of his metallic and industrial materials, Fifthly, I could know that formal completion beauty and plasticity which were achieved by his geometric plastic principles had infinite diversity when developed in textile design.
