조소/판화 혼합기법에 의한 패션일러스트레이션 연구

Abstract

Fashion illustration is more objective and restrictive as compare to fine art due to the property of pursuing precise description and unique form simultaneously. This restrictive condition discourages experimentalism of artist and impedes unique expression and liberal formation. However, because it becomes indistinct the area or fine art and practical art in modern art, the classification of two parts of art in terms of material and technique has never propriety. It seems to know no limits the artistic extent that Fashion Illustration as the new formative arts must develop. This study is to break highbrow barrier as for material or expressional technique and to develop the mixed technique of monotype and relief, which is to obtain new formation language of fashion illustration. The mixed technique of printing and relief is adapted by using Gel medium as the paper of printing which image is transferred to. The motives and the colors of Korean folk painting is selected to apply Korean beauty to modern art as well as to reassure the superb beauty of the Korean Folk Art. Therefore, this study is to expand the world of fashion illustration as embodying new expressional style by adding volume of relief to characteristics of printing, and to accent on outstanding beauty of traditional image of Korea by using Korean folk painting in modern fashion image. First of all, this paper classifies and analyzes the concepts and historical transformation of fashion illustration through bibliographic research. Then it examines expression form of fashion illustration by classifying the work of the fashion illustration artists. As the method, it investigates fundamental definition, history of relief and monotype. This paper also classifies and analyzes the concept, types, formative feature of Korean folk painting as the image expression, Illustrations used to Korean folk painting were presented in order to find the method that applies Korean folk painting to fashion illustration. On the base of these theoretical research, this paper introduces 10 pieces of relief/ monotype mixed technique. The result following these experiments are; First, monotype that uses Gel medium is able to express embossment. When the embossing surface of plate was coated with Gel medium of cream type before drying, relief image appears through transparent surface. Second, Gel medium was able to substitute the role of the paper, because it has hygroscopicity. Application of Gel medium could express painting technique such as brush touch, blending, impressing, and scratching. Third, The various expression is possible because it will voluntarily be able to control the material feeling of the surface while the plate was molded. This process gets up a diffused reflection, and it could be attributable to emphasis the dream and phantasm image of the work. Fourth, the expressible area of fashion illustration is expanded by application various formative elements of Korean folk painting to fashion illustration. With the use and expression of saturated colors and motives of nature image which disregard a distance, the sensible Korean image could apply to fashion illustration. Fifth, it proves that fashion illustration is an art field which is possible to be various visual expression by application of new technique and traditional image. To sum up, this study proves relief / monotype mixed technique as discovering the possibility of Gel medium as new expressive material. It also proves that newly applied materials can open a new word of formative arts. Due to the cohesion and transparentness of Gel medium, it seem to be used with other different materials. Therefore the various study of materials is necessity. This lead to conclude that fashion illustration utilizing relief / monotype mixed technique or Korean folk painting is full field of endless trial and experiments which will eventually expand the boundary of it and height.;패션 일러스트레이션은 의상이미지의 정확한 표현과 감각적이고 독특한 조형미를 동시에 추구해야하는 그 특성으로 인해 순수 예술에 비해 객관적이며 제한적인 성질을 지녀왔다. 이러한 제약은 작가에게 실험 정신을 고무시키기엔 적합하지 않아 개성적인 표현과 자유로운 조형 세계의 구축에 장애가 되어왔다. 그러나 순수 회화와 실용 회화의 영역이 불분명해지는 현대 미술에 있어 재료나 기술 또는 소재에 의한 두 분야의 구분은 전혀 타당성을 갖고 있지 않다 새로운 조형 예술로서의 패션 일러스트레이션이 전개해야 할 미학적 범위는 그 한계가 없어 보인다. 이에 본 연구는 패션 일러스트레이션의 재료나 표현 기법에 있어서 고답적인 한계를 벗어나 모노타입판화와 부조의 혼합기법을 개발하여 패션 일러스트레이션의 표현 영역을 확대하고자하였다. 아크릴 보조제인 젤미디움을 모노타입판화에서 이미지가 전사되는 피인쇄물로 선택함으로써 이러한 조소와 판화의 혼합표현 가능성을 시도하였다. 또한, 한국 민화의 모티브와 색채를 디자인과 그의 표현에 이용하여 우리나라 고유의 미감을 현대 예술에 적용하는 한편, 민화의 뛰어난 조형미를 재조명하고자 하였다. 즉, 본 연구는 부조의 양감과 판화의 특징을 접목시켜 기존에 접해볼 수 없었던 새로운 표현 양식을 구현하여 패션 일러스트레이션의 새로운 표현 기법을 개발, 표현 영역을 확대하는 동시에 한국민화의 조형성을 현대 패션 이미지에 응용함으로써 전통적 이미지가 가지는 시각적 가치를 재조명하려는데 목적을 둔다. 본 연구에서는 우선 패션 일러스트레이션의 역사와 양식을 시대에 따라 분류한 후 표현 기법과 이미지 표현의 양 측면에서 이론을 접근하였다. 표현 기법으로서 부조와 모노타입의 기본적 정의와 역사, 유래를 고찰하고, 이미지 표현 측면에서는 한국 민화의 개념과 유형, 조형적 특징을 문헌을 통해 연구하고, 민화가 이용된 일러스트레이션의 사례를 제시함으로써 민화를 패션 일러스트레이션에 적용할 수 있는 방법론을 모색하고자하였다. 이를 토대로 조소/판화 혼합기법을 이용한 총 10점의 작품을 제작하였다. 이러한 연구를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 젤미디움을 사용한 모노타입 기법은 부조성을 그대로 표현할 수 있었다. 건조되기 전의 크림타입 젤미디움으로 판에 표현된 요철 표면에 발라주면 그대로 마른 후 투명한 표면 안의 부조 이미지가 투시된다. 이렇게 해서 시각적으로 감상이 되는 작품은 양각이지만 실제 조형된 모양은 음각으로서 나타나는 음/양각의 동시 구현이 가능하게 되었고, 판화와 부조가 혼합된 기법을 표현할 수 있었다. 둘째, 젤미디움은 흡습성을 지니므로 일반 판화에서 피인쇄물인 종이의 역할을 대신할 수 있었다. 젤미디움의 사용은 종이에 프린트하는 모노타입과 마찬가지로 붓 자국·번지기·찍기·긁기 등 회화의 표현을 가능하게 하는 한편, 젤미디움의 투명성 때문에 반인쇄 방식의 판화에서 고려해야하는 좌우의 뒤바뀜을 고려하지 않아도 되므로 제작상의 편의성을 주는 효과적인 기법임을 확인하였다. 셋째, 젤미디움으로 판을 제작하는 과정에서 표면의 질감을 임의로 조정할 수 있기 때문에 여러 가지 다양한 표현이 가능하였다. 손이나 아크릴 판, 기타 도구를 이용하여 자연스러운 표면 질감을 줄 수 있는데, 이는 민화가 지니는 소박한 민중성의 이미지와 부합되었으며, 이 때문에 일어나는 난반사로 인해 투명성과 더불어 작품의 몽환적 이미지를 부각시킬 수 있었다. 넷째, 민화의 여러 가지 요소를 패션 일러스트레이션에 적용하여 패션 일러스트레이션의 표현 영역을 확대할 수 있었다. 농묵의 색채와 주변 자연의 모티브의 도입, 그리고 원근을 무시한 심상의 표현을 이용해 한국적이면서도 감각적인 이미지를 패션 일러스트레이션에 적용할 수 있었다. 다섯째, 패션 일러스트레이션은 상기와 같은 새로운 기법의 적용과 이미지 응용으로 다양한 시각적 표현이 가능한 예술 분야로서, 기법과 이미지의 다각적 응용은 인상적인 의상 이미지를 표현할 수 있으며, 예술 단계에 놓여 있는 현대 패션 일러스트레이션의 표현 영역을 확장시킬 수 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구에서는 젤미디움의 새로운 표현 소재로서의 가능성을 발견함으로써 조소와 판화 기법을 결합한 혼합기법을 개발했고, 그를 이용한 패션 일러스트레이션 제작을 통해 색다른 조형 예술 세계를 추구할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 젤미디움의 점착력과 투명성은 또 다른 기법과의 혼용도 가능하게 할 것으로 보며, 이에 재료의 다각적인 실험과 연구가 요구된다. 더불어, 이미 일러스트레이션 분야에서 응용도가 높은 민화의 이미지 표현은 패션 일러스트레이션에서도 그 적용의 가능성이 무한할 것으로 본다. 이에 다양한 표현 양식의 후속 연구를 기대한다.
