The background and substance of aesthetic principles of the stage setting initiated by the symbolism in the early twentieth century were observed to perceive the characteristics of contemporary stage setting systematically. In the chapter Ⅰ, the concept of time-space was observed. It started to have a new forms and principles from the end of 19th century. That is, as recognized not as separated space and time but as the unified concepts, contemporary stage expression became an 'expression of humand inner world', in one phrase, stage and the space which was no more than mere a concept of physical function became the space in which a psychic mind and an invisible inner truth is expressed. Time-space became abstract forms visualizing subjective world. Thus, stage employed symbolic language and aesthetic principle. The aesthetic elements are line, color, shape, space, quality and principles are harmony, balance, proportion emphasis, rhythm. In the chapter Ⅱ, the historical background of stage setting from the ancient to the end of nineteenth century was looked Into. The Classical stage offered formal background for actors that made use of the front faces of permanent buildings that might represent streets, temples and royal palaces ; the Middle Age stage symbolically suggested various places which wire existed simultaneously the stage of Renaissance period created a illusion of the physical space and the practice of perspective became gradually complicated ; and, when arrived to the realism of the nineteenth century, an 'illusionism' as absolute physical space reached to the peak of its priority. In the chapter Ⅲ, the composition of contemporary stage setting and its aesthetic character were investigated concretly. As the aesthetic principle of stage design initiated by symbolism goes under expressionism, a synthetic expression through combining 'theory and reality', that is 'symbol and function' is effected on the stage. Time-space are united with dramatic action in symbollsts' stages-Appia and Craig at the beginning of 20th century and Josef Svoboda from the middle of the century. Upon thus, general characters of contemporary stage setting could be seen as follows : 1) 'variety', from the aspect that it is applied without distinction to any specific style or technique, 2) 'symbolism', by many signs and symbols which are required in the process to seek for an objectification of subjective images, 3) 'technicality', that satisfies the promp variation of stage with developed electronic media, and, 4) 'purity', not as such drama stage that would be recognized as a composite body of every art as in the past, but as a sigular, pure art. I have presented a design of Shakespeare's 「macbeth」in a symbolist's manner. Especially, as for the Shakespearean drama, since it takes wide ranges of scenery and much time for scene-conversion, a variety of change in a light and soft stream was seeked for, and endless depth of human desire and the limit of his remorse were symbolized as eternal time and the dust determined to pass away from the scene.-
