Abstract
The recently increasing concern about Islam has been bringing up the issues of the understanding of Islam and its relations with churches in Korea. Considering that the percentage of Christians and Muslims make half of the world's population, we can recognize the importance of the relations of these two religions. We should try to find another way besides hostile relations and competitive mission. It is necessary not only for peaceful coexistence and furthermore it does not mean giving up the mission. Rather it means discovering the possibilities of resuming and extending the meaning of mission though the issue of dialogue with Islam. That is the purpose of this report. The primary work is overcoming the restricted understanding of mission which we have. Mission which is bound to mediate between the Christ's event and the world, might have different paradigms in each time. In the rising ecumenical paradigm of post modernism the creative tensions between different contrary natures are a decisive concept. In this paradigm one of the important factors is' dialogue'. Dialogue is based on openness and integrity. We can remove misunderstanding and prejudice and get right information through dialogue which is not unilateral communication but mutual. Also the dialogical personality respects each on an equal footing and behaves responsibly as decisive subject. Its Christian meaning is to be open toward relations as to be open toward truth because the Christian God is a personal relational God and present within relations. Dialogue makes the possibility of personal relations and that is the possibility of mission. Such a principle of dialogue has to be applied even to dialogue with other religions as it is. This presupposes that illiberal exclusivism practiced by the church is not biblical and dialogue with people of other faiths is not against the Bible. The last several decades have seen profound discussions about dialogue with other faiths and mission commitment in the International Missionary Conference and World Council of Churches. Though all churches have not had a concerted view they have stressed the need of dialogue with other faiths and it has been positively tried. Gradually discussions have grown up affirmatively and it has been founded on the missionary meanings of dialogue. Eventually it has become clear that dialogue does not substitute for mission but extends and restores mission. When we have relations with people of other faiths as equal subjects and do not force them to convert it might be the place where the Spirit is acting in relations. There are cases of Christian-Muslim dialogue based on theses discussions of mission and dialogue. Dialogues of international dimension are mostly 'academic dialogue' and 'practical dialogue' and mean making a base for dialogue for parish churches. Even in local churches dealing seriously with relations with Muslims it is possible to discover the contact point of mission and dialogue. Different cases of 'academic', 'practical', 'spiritual' and 'life sharing' dialogue in the local dimension would show that accomplished dialogue is not different from the mission commitment we have to achieve. That is not the self-satisfaction of informing Muslims of Jesus Christ by words only but letting them resume their plentiful spirits before God and people. It is needless to turn our eyes to the distance. We could perceive it if we see a number of Muslims living as our neighbours in this country now. Certainly not every dialogue can be identified with mission. But when we have dialogue with conviction and definite identity as Christians that is mission. We cannot restrict mission because we are not missionaries but God is. When we have personal relations with someone and depend on the Holy Spirit who is leading us in our relations, 'dialogue mission' would accomplish that. In particular it is regarded that this 'dialogue mission is appropriate to the characteristic of Islam.
