오토마티즘의 선(線)적 표현을 응용한 의상디자인 연구

Abstract

의상은 인간의 의지와 감정은 물론, 자연적 환경 및 그 시대의 흐름 속에서 인류의 정신활동과도 긴밀한 상호 관계를 맺고 있다. 특히 그 안에 내재된 미의식 및 그 표현이라는 측면에서 볼 때 회화와의 유기적 연관은 의상에 중요한 모티브로써 그 미적 표현을 다양하고 풍요롭게 해주어 활력 있는 디자인 창출을 위해 의미가 크다고 하겠다. 현대로 올수록 급속히 변해가고 다양해지는 삶 속에서 인간은 궁극적으로 지나치게 물질적인 욕구로 인해 상실했던 인간성의 회복을 갈망한다고 할 때, 기계적ㆍ외향적 표현보다 자연스럽고 인간미가 있는 정신적인 표현에 대한 최근의 관심은 단순한 우연이나 한때의 유행 이상의 의미를 갖는다. 이러한 미적 가치나 정신문화에 대한 재인식은 회화분야에서 잘 드러나고 있는데, 도덕 내지는 미학적 선입견에서 탈피하여, 본질적인 것에 보다 직접적으로 다가가는 것을 목표로 하고 있는 현대회화의 오토마티즘(자동기술)적 경향이 그 큰 줄기를 이루고 있다고 하겠다. 이에, 본 연구는 오토마티즘적 회화의 주요한 표현요소인 비구상적인 선을 모티브로 의상에 도입함으로써 회화의 내면적 세계가 의상에 표현되도록 하여 심미성 뿐만 아니라 내면성이 드러나는 의상디자인 개발 가능성을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구의 방법 및 내용에 있어서 우선 오토마티즘의 개념 및 전개와 표현적 특성을 문헌고찰을 통해 알아본 후, 의상에서 이러한 오토마티즘적 회화의 요소가 나타난 작품을 표집하여 살펴보았다. 다음으로, 작품제작의 기법과 관련하여 납방염의 정의 및 역사, 그리고 기법의 종류와 특징에 대하여 알아보고, 의상에서 응용한 사례를 살펴보았다. 끝으로, 이론적 배경을 바탕으로 오토마티즘의 선(線)적인 표현을 응용한 의상 8점의 작품을 디자인ㆍ제작하여, 아래와 같은 결과를 얻었다. 이론적 고찰에 의한 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이론적 배경에서 우선 오토마티즘의 개념 및 전개와 표현적 특성을 알아보았는데, 오토마티즘은 초현실주의에서 '이성에 의한 통제 없이 의식하의 세계를 탐구하기 위한 방법'으로 정의된 후 '무의식적인 작용에 의한 예기치 않은 아름다움, 그 우연의 효과'를 가리키는 조형적 용어로 쓰이게 되었다. 그 표현방식은 다다에서 추상표현주의에 이르는 동안 다양하게 시도되는데, 그 중 오토마틱한 선의 표현이 두드러진다. 둘째, 오토마티즘의 전개과정에서 보았듯이 작가에 따라 추상과 구상 사이에서 다양한 표현방식을 채택하고 있으나, 본 연구에서는 자동소묘의 주된 조형요소인 선(線)을 모티브의 소재로 삼아 오토마티즘을 작품제작에 도입하였다. 윤곽이 아닌 비구상적인 선(線)은 오토마틱하다 할 수 있으며, 동양의 서예에서의 자동성과 다이나믹한 요소를 그들의 조형방법으로 채택한 일련의 추상표현주의 화가들이 이를 증명한다고 하겠다. 작품 제작에 의한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 납방염은 속도감 있는 서법적 선(線)의 표현에 효과적이고, 녹았던 파라핀이 굳을 때 발생하는 불규칙적인 크랙(crack)은 의도치 못했던 효과까지 더해 오토마틱한 표현에 적합하였다. 둘째, 총 4점의 작품에 사용된 펠팅 기법(felting)과 수제지 기법은 임베딩시에 실을 떨어뜨려 오토마틱한 선의 모티브를 얻을 때와 동일한 과정을 거치게 되어 모티브의 표현에 용이하였으며, 또한 납방염직물에 표현된 선과 조화를 이룰 수 있었다. 이상의 결과로, 심미성 뿐 아니라, 시대의 흐름과 정신적인 면까지 수용ㆍ반영할 수 있는 의상 디자인의 개발 가능성을 실험하는 연구를 하였는데, 사회전반을 통해 흐르고 있는 시대정신이 예술을 비롯한 문화전반에 영향을 미치고, 의상 또한 이와 불가분의 관계라 할 때, 이를 잘 읽고 풀어낸다는 것은 의상의 예술성과 실용성, 그 어느 쪽에서도 외면할 수 없다. 따라서, 이에 부합하는 독창적 의상디자인의 연구는 물론이고, 아울러 기법과 관련해서도 기존의 방법들의 단점을 보완해 가는 노력 또한 계속되어야 할 것이다.;Fashion initially have come from practical needs and, it has been developing itself in the close relations with all the other human activities such as Economy, Politics, Society, Culture, Religion, and Art. Especially Art's role in fashion is important with its aesthetic value and the various expressions, which enhances and enriches the fashion design, providing diversity of motif. Nowadays, the world is awakening to a spiritual crisis represented in the forms of alienation and dehumanization, caused by the rapid progress with which modem society has made. Therefore people have started paying attention to humane and spiritual way of expression. This phenomenon has been showing in Modem Art, as the form of Automatism, which pursues essence of life and Art, emancipating the artists from moral and aesthetic prejudices, and breaking superficial views. Following that line of thought, I intended to experiment the possibilities of fashion design that takes on the aesthetic value which reflects the spirit of the age, adopting the spiritual and aesthetic value of Automatism on fashion with the non-representational linear motif, the main element of Automatic drawing. Following conclusions are the results. First, Automatism, which started in Dadaism, developed in surrealism and succeeded to Abstract-Expressionism, indication the unexpected positive effect acquired from unconsciously produced performance. Its main motif has been shown as various forms of non-representational lines. Secondly, Automatism has been expressed either in the abstract style or in a somewhat concrete way. In this study, I took the method with non-representational lines, which is proved Automatic by these Abstract-Expressionists who also take the Automatic elements and dynamics of oriental calligraphy. The next conclusions are regarding the techniques used for the dress-making. Third, wax-resist-dyeing, which was applied to all of the dresses was not only effective for expressing speedy and calligraphic brush touches, but also suitable for Automatic result. It added unexpectable irregular cracks while the wax dried. Lastly, felting and paper-making, which are used for the four of dresses, have been being studied a lot in the fabric art field due to the convenient handling and the various results possible. I applied these techniques combined with embedding and quilting, which was effective in expressing the abstract linear motif with embedded woolen yarn In this study, I tried to design a fashion which imply spirituality, through taking Automatic drawing on it with non-representational linear motif. The spirit of the age of the society affects the whole culture including aesthetic value and the way of expression. Art shows this directly and fashion can be enriched by applying Art as the motif. Thus, incessant study both of the aesthetic value and the techniques concerning this concept should be continued.
