G. Mahler의 오케스트라 가곡 연구

Abstract

G. 말러(Gustav Mahler 1860-1911)는 19세기와 20세기의 전환기에 활동한 대표적 작곡가이다. 그의 작품은 대부분 교향곡과 가곡으로 구성되며 이 두 장르는 서로 밀접한 관계를 갖는다. 그는 교향곡에 가곡의 선율을 도입하고 합창과 독창을 포함시키는 등 성악과 기악의 조화를 추구했고, 가곡에도 오케스트라 반주를 붙임으로써 그 표현의 폭을 넓혔다. 말러는 "오케스트라 가곡"이라는 장르에서 자신이 추구했던 표현의 깊이와 다양함, 정교함을 나타낼 수 있었고, 이러한 특징은 「대지의 노래」 (Das Lied von der Erde, 1907-08)에서 잘 드러난다. 본 논문은 말러의 「대지의 노래」 를 중심으로 오케스트라 가곡을 연구하였다. 먼저 세기 전환기의 시대적 배경과 오케스트라 가곡의 흐름, 말러의 음악적 특징을 살펴보았고 그 다음에 『대지의 노래」를 형식구조, 선율, 리듬, 악상을 포함한 음악적 특징, 시와 음악의 연관성 및 성악성부와 오케스트라 반주의 관계성 등의 측면에서 분석하였다. 연구 결과 각 곡의 형식은 3·4부 구성으로 소나타, 스케르쪼 등 관현악의 형식을 따르고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 선율에 있어서는 4도음정의 도약, 장·단2도 진행이 많이 사용되며 민요풍의 단순한 선율이 특징이다. 빈번한 박자의 변화로 리듬과 선율은 자연스러운 흐름을 갖는다. 「대지의 노래」 에서 오케스트라는 색다른 악기의 사용과 특수효과, 전음음계내의 반음계의 사용 등으로 시의 분위기와 장면을 회화적으로 묘사하면서 이국적인 분위기를 나타내고 있다. 또한 대위법적 선율 진행을 통해 개별적인 악기의 음색을 부각시키는, 실내악과 같은 형태로 다루어지고 있고, 성악 성부와 오케스트라는 거의 대등한 비중을 가진다. 즉 「대지의 노래」 는 말러가 가곡에서 항상 추구해왔던 교향곡적인 모든 가능성이 구현된 작품으로 볼 수 있다.;One of the leaders of the transitional period between Post-Romantic movement and Contemporary music is the German composer, Gustav Mahler(1860-1911). We can find that conservative and progressive elements are combined in the music of Gustav Mahler. His symphonies and songs epitomize his creative world and these two heterogeneous genres closely interrelate with each other in his works. He infused the melodies of the songs into his symphonies and also included sections for the chorus and solo voice, thus consummating a harmony of the vocal and the instrumental. Such qualities can also be observed in his numerous orchestral songs. By fusing the dense interrelationship of the voice and the instrumunt into the miniature form of the song he was able to make each instrument sing with individual character and tone. Mahler's use of the melodic tone of these solo instrumunts bring out the effect of a chamber symphony. The characteristics of Mahler's music can be observed in "Das Lied von der Erde"(1907-1908). My attempts on this thesis are to study the musical forms and styles of Mahler's orchestral songs through his later work, "Das Lied von der Erde". First of all it attempts to define the characteristics of Mahler's orchestral song in general and then study the background of the appearance of the "Das Lied von der Erde". This study is focused on the analyses of the structure, rhythm, melody, dynamic, orchestration and the relation between poetry and music through 6 songs of "Das Lied von der Erde". In conclusion, "Das Lied von der Erde" written by orchestral form. The melodies in these songs are in various styles. Especially, we can see the use of the 4th-degree motion and conjunct motion, which give a folk and simple impression, and chromatic motion. Mahler's use of the colorful orchestral accompaniment with special instruments and characteristic effect gives more depth to the expression of the content of the poem. The accompaniment is given as equally a melodic role as the vocal melody and also shows the contrapuntal structure of the melodic progression. That is to say, "Das Lied von der Erde" sums up and fulfills all the symphonic potentialities in the song and the song cycle that he had always seen and explored.
