독립신문의 계몽활동 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 독립신문의 계몽활동에 관한 것을 교육에 관한 내용을 분석함으로써 살펴보고자 하는 것이다. 본고에서는 그 주된 논의를 독립신문의 논설에 제시된 교육에 관한 여러 가지 내용과 그것들이 당시에 가진 의미로 한정하고자 했다. 독립신문은 그때까지 몇몇의 선택된 사람들의 특권이었던 지식을 일반 국민에게 보편화하고자 했으며, 한국 국민들에게 독립심을 고취시키고자 했다. 이 신문은 국민들을 교육함으로써 한국이 독립을 성취할 수 있으며 근대화하고 부강한 나라가 될 것이라고 주장했다. 이 신문은 교육이 성별의 차이나 계급에 관계없이 모든 국민에게 동등하게 실행되어야 한다고 주장했다. 특히 이 신문은 여성과 아동의 교육을 강조했다. 한국인들에게 외세에 대항하는 정신을 고취시키고자 했기 때문에 독립신문은 한국 정부의 중국에 대한 사대를 비판하면서 국민들에게 한국의 역사를 가르쳐야 한다고 주장했다. 이 신문은 시급한 문제의 하나로 매일매일의 생활에 적용될 수 있는 실용적 학문을 보급해야 한다고 주장했다. 이 교육의 주된 목표는 국민들로 하여금 전통적인 유교의 영향에서 벗어나도록 하는 것이었다. 독립신문은 국민들의 교육을 위해 학교, 유학, 신문을 제시했다. 학교와 유학은 발달된 학업을 위한 상보적인 방법이었으며, 신문은 특히 직업을 갖고 있는 성인들을 위한 것이었다. 커다란 기대에 비해 이 신문의 혁신적인 사상들이 성공적인 결실을 많이 맺지는 못했다. 그러나 이러한 사상들은 한국의 교육체제에 있어서 즉시 변화를 가져오지는 않았지만, 대중으로 하여금 국민교육이 필요하다는 인식을 증대시켰다.;This study is to investigate the Enlightenment movement of the Tongnip Sinmun through the analysis of the comments of education. This work has attempted to confine its major discussion within the various educational issues presented in the Editorial of the newspaper and their meanings in those days. The Tongnip Sinmun had a purpose of sharing the higher knowledge owned by few aristocrats with the common people, and inspiring the Korean people to go a step forward for the independence of their nation. It insisted that Korea should achieve its independence and become a modernized and rich nation by educating the public. This newspaper maintained that education must be distributed to all people equally regardless of their sex and class. Especially it put a strong emphasis on the education of women and children. For the purpose of stimulating Koreans to fight against foeign forces, the Tongnip Sinmun criticized Korean governments' submission to China and insisted to educate people about Korean history. It maintained that one of the urgent problems of Korea was to spread out practical education which could be applied to the everyday life. The main goal of this education was to help people escape from the dogmatic influences of traditional Confucianism. It suggested school education, studying abroad and newspaper reading for better education of the people. School education and studying abroad are two complementary ways of the advanced study, and newspaper reading was particularly for the adult who had his/her job. Contrary to much expectation, innovative ideas of this newspaper did not turn out to be successful. Although these ideas did not bring about an immediate improvement in the educational system of Korea, they increased public awareness of need for education of the people.
