Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the choreographic traits that reveal in the major works of Anna Sokolow who is one of the America's modern dance choreographers to examine her choreographic trend. To accomplish this purpose, Anna Sokolow's life and the streams of American modern dance since the 1940s were investigated mainly around the relevant literature, and based on this investigation Sokolsw's choreographic traits, trend, dance form and substance and idea toward dance were looked at. The core of Anna Sokolow's idea toward dance in respect to education is that to be a good choreographer, students need to learn every kind of dance as much as possible, and she regraded natural expression of one's thinking and feeling freed from general rules is important. As for Sokolow's choreographic trend, she tried to express modern man's feeling most frankly into a dance and so dealt primarily such themes as man's sense of isolation, solitude, absurdity of society, fear, and lost of hope, and she used everyday movements free and unbound by form instead of applying high techniques. In Sokolow's representative works like "Lyric Suite" (1953), "Rooms" (1955) and "Dream" (1961) which contributed to establish her reputation as an excellent choreographer, extremely restrained and enriched expressions from the heart were used as a dance form and matter to show the dark sides of society while rejecting to use splendid techniques. As for the dance form, it followed that of dance drama and A-B-A based on the expressional nature of each character. As a consequence, further studies are required to investigate Anna Sokolow's choreographic traits, especially by the dance artists who want to create their own dance, and the author of this study expects that many people engaged in dance and creative activities could grant another new meaning to their works based on those studies.
