우리시대의 사회적 풍경에 대한 고찰

Abstract

우리나라는 해방과 정부수립 그리고 전란이 남긴 상처 등으로 정치의 혼돈과 불안한 경제상황, 사회 문화의 혼란 등 어두웠던 사회적 풍경의 연속이었다. 특히 60년대 부터 시작된 수차례에 걸친 경제 개발 계획에 따른 산업화 과정은 가치관의 혼란과 급격한 사회구조의 변화를 맞이하였다. 60년대 중반이후 무분별한 서구 문화와 물질위주의 사고는 전통적인 사고방식과 불협화음을 빚으며 갖가지 사회 문화적인 병리현상을 유발했다. 급속한 산업화 과정에서 6, 70년대는 발전의 과도기적 시대였으며, 허약한 가치기반 위에 있던 전통적인 의식과 사회적 양상들은 혼란속에서 변하거나 무너져 버리고, 80년대 경제는 안정권에 들어서지만 현대화에 휘말리면서 사회 문화는 물론 생활양상까지도 현저하게 바뀌어가고 있다. 본인은 6, 70년대 산업화 과정에서 도시에 존재하면서 변해갔던 제반 사회적 양상들을 찾아 기록하고자 한다. 도시에서 사라져 버린 모습들이 지방 소도시나 그 주변지역 농촌 등에서는 아직도 존재하고 있다. 우리의 사회적 풍경을 시골 소도시의 풍경 속에서 노스텔직하게 표현하면서 일상적 현실을 부각시키는 것이다. 이러한 작업방향은 그 시대의 사회적 양상을 진솔하게 규명하는 다큐멘터리 사진가들과 그 맥락을 같이한다. 특히 Willaim Christenberry와 Stephen Shore의 접근 방법과 많은 유사점을 갖는다. 그들은 60년대 '사회적 풍경 Social Landscape'으로의 접근을 보다 더 심화시키고 시골의 풍경을 감정을 가지고 표현한 컬러 사진가이다. 이들은 컬러 사진가이지만 시각의 본질적 접근은 본인과 유사하다. 작품제작에 사용한 카메라는 6×6중형 카메라에 텅 빈 공간을 강조하기 위해 50㎜ 광각렌즈를 주로 사용하였으며 정면에서 혹은 45도 빗겨난 시각으로 주제에 가까이 접근하였다. 특히 산업화 당시는 컬러 사진이 본격적으로 도입되지 않았으며 그 시대가 가지고 있던 분위기를 표현하기 위해 흑백의 모노톤으로 제작하였다.;Since its liberation from the grip of Japanese repression, Korea has gone through gloomy decades that are represented by war, political upheaval, unstable economy, and loss of cultural identity. In particular, industrialization due to the 1960s ecomic development plan brought with it disturbance in value system as well as rapid change in the social structure. Since the 1960s, indiscreet import of western civilization and materialism-tipped value system has created a cacophony with traditional ways of thought. As a result, various socio-cultural diseases appeared. During the 1960~1970s the period of rapid industrialization. traditional values and social features that were based on fragile underpinning either has altered in line with a new environment or just collapsed. At the turn of 1980s, as the economy entered the period of stability, modernization of the entire society seemed to have changed life style as well as other cultural features drastically. I attempt to record various aspects of city life which has undergone a drastic change. In either the country side or small cities, we can find images that have already ceased to exist in large cities. From these images, we can recall the forgotten days in nostalgia and also experience the reality of daily life. This style of photograph bears much similarity to those documentaries that depict social phenomena in great reality, particularly to the style of William Christenberry and Stephen Shore. They expressed rural things with vivid feelings and thus succeeded in deepening the 1960s approach toward social landscape. Though being color photographers, their stance for the essence of existence seems to be in close similarity to mine. I mostly used 6 x 6 medium-size camera and 50mm wide-angle lenses to emphasize the emptiness of space. I used to approach the subjects either squarely or at 45 degree. In order to get more realistic images of the past days, I employed black and white tones.
