Abstract
Claude Achille Debussy(1862-1918) was a great French composer who influenced the music of the twentieth century as a pioneer of impressionistic music. Among Debussy's many compositions, piano works occupy a key position, and his special compositional techniques contribute greatly to the literature of piano in the early twentieth century. In this study 'Deux Arabesques', representing Debussy's early piano work style, are analyzed, and how he expressed the term 'Arabesque' through his special musical method is summarized. The purpose of this analysis is to define the musical characteristics in form, harmony, melody and rhythm of Debussy's 'Deux Arabesques'. The results of the analysis are as follows: Both two works have a three part form and each of the three parts, employ the definite tonality of tonic-subdominant-tonic. The major and the minor scale are mainly used in both works, and the first work has an exotic and oriental mood, because the Dorian mode and the pentatonic scale are applied to it. The motives and the figures contained in each melody are widely applied in decoration, repetition and extension forms, etc., and these applications appear in arpeggio form, lengthy progressions, ostinato and sequence. In the harmony, triads, seventh chords, ninth chords, added note chords, the parallel progression of triads and sixth chords and gliding chords are used effectively. The rhythmic change of 2 against 3, triplet figure rhythm and syncopated rhythm are harmonized with the change of tempo and dynamics in the works. The two piano works have much decorative charm expressed by the elegant and fascinating salon style of his time. The romantic tendency strongly appears in the two works, but the impressionistic tendency also appears to a small degree. Debussy showed his particuar musical genius in these two short piano works through his unique and individual expression within the classical form.
