Abstract
A Certain Style of a period reflects the aesthetic value and political, economical, cultural situation of the period complexively. This style has new modeling concept and creates a new style, making a compromise between technological development and the elements of the past. In the early twentieth century, a lot of artistic patterns were created and discarded with several experiments and studies. Among them, Art-Nouveau rejected that period's popular civilization flow, and held on to tradition. However, Cubic, Future, and Bauhaus styles excluded the tradition of the past, and pursued mechanical aesthectic value, so were separated from the population of that time. On the other hand, Art-Deco accepted new materials, forms and aesthetic value from the development of technology, and played a role as mediun between the separated style and popular lives, by not excluding the tradition of the past at the same time. The aesthetic value of this Art-Deco style has been reinterpreted and reevaluated, and affecting modem design greatly. This study has a purpose to apply the characteristics of Art-Deco style to odern clothes and suggest the possibility as the ,motive of individualistic design creation, by examining 1920s' and 1930s' Art-Deco style and analyzing modeling peculiarities. As theoretical background, first, I grasped the concept, forming background and developmental characteristics of Art-Deco style, Second, classitied and analyzed the application examples of Art-Deco style through books and photos. Also, I produced total 8 works with patch work, by reconstructing the modeling and decorations of Art-Deco, and expressing complexively. Vsing polybonding , appropriate to cubic modeling, I supplemented several problems which general matenals have. The result of this study is as follows. 1. In the result of adapting the particular modeling beauty of Art Deco to modern dress and its ornaments, 1 could express unique modeling beauty harmonizing with modern sense, and suggested the possibility of developing creative and various designs fitting modern modeling sense by systematically restructuring or complexly expressing the modeling characteristic of Art Deco, not just as an imitation. 2. I could confirm that the eclectic and mixed modeling characteristic of Art Deco had a lot of possibilities to develop as a design factor which could be adapted to polysemic periodical situations in the late 20th century. 3. in producing this work, I could make plane, relief, and cubic expression, and invented unique modeling beauty by using a poly bonding fabric. 4. In producing this work, I could make a quilting effect of a bonding material by using a patch work technique.
