Abstract
The extinction features of optically thin ice crystal clouds in the polar regions have been examined from the spectral data obtained by the Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer(IRIS) flown on Nimbus-4 satellite in 1970. The IRIS data indicated the existence of the clouds that probably extended from the upper troposphere into the lower stratosphere during winter and early spring. The spectral characteristics of these polar cirrus clouds differ somewhat from those of the optically thin cirrus clouds in the topics. From theoretical simulation of the infrared spectra in the 8-25 ㎛ region, these polar clouds are inferred to have a vertical stratification in particle size, with larger particles(-l2 ,㎛) in the bottom of the cloud and smaller ones(
