Abstract
This subject is concentrated on Keith Haring(1958∼1990)'s graffiti works. In the coming 1980s, it was demanded to establish new system in the world because the cold war and the past order of the world collasped. In the middle of this swirl of changes, the previous standard of values broke into pieces and uncertainty became prevalent. At the same time, criticism on the excessive formality and sternness of Minimalism which is representative of Modernism began to emerge in Art world. In this situation, what is called Post-modernism could not help coming to the front in the history of art. Post-modernism not only shows the absence of theoretical unity, the acceptance of diversity and variability, and the inter-penetrating phenomenon of various forms, but also has a trend in which relativity is recognized without any absolute values. Post-modernism also preferred to adopt the established figures and methods, or to return to traditional subjects such as American 'New Painting', German 'Neo Expressionism', Italian 'Trans Avant-grade' and French 'Figuration Libre'. Graffiti means drawn things anywhere as a form of American new paintings. Graffiti, which consists of words as well as drawings and plainly shows mass-produced American culture, began to be drawn on subways in New York, and walls in cities mostly by teen agers of lower classes from the late 1960s. In modern times, graffiti often discovered in human history since the Old Stone Age was occasionally used in Art works on purpose. In the 1980s, New York graffiti artists mostly from minority races organized graffiti groups to express themselves and to emit their feelings. They wandered about to find out the places such as subways and walls in streets, and began to make a gradual attraction as artists. Keith Haring is one of the most successful artists in graffiti art. He became famous for drawings on the walls in New York subway and since then he made his debut into Galleries, displaying the same kind of works as subway graffiti. On the other hand, he attempted to express his cartoon-like images in steel sculpture, in mural and even in his early performance. He boldly placed homoerotic elements in his works as well.
