Abstract
This study compares a Korean request speech act with a Thai request speech act and analyzes what kind of difference exists between them. The purposes of the study are to examine (1) whether Thai Korean learners (TKLs) are influenced by their native language, Thai, in case when they commit a request act in Korean, (2) whose speech act the TKLs prefer between Korean and Thai, and (3) how the request strategies differs according to factors when a request is made. The contents of this study are as follows. Chapter Ⅰ describes the purpose of the study and proposes research questions along with literature reviews. Limited studies have been made by comparing a Thai and a Korean language up to now and it can be said that there have been no pragmatic studies for the TKLs. Based on the examination of previous studies, it was found that studies on a foreign request speech act are usually limited to English speaking Korean learners or Japanese Korean learners and no other study on other foreign learner has been made, so the necessity for a pragmatic study, which is actually able to helpful to the TKLs, is also explained. Chapter Ⅱ describes the theoretical backgrounds of a speech act theory, the concept of request speech act, and the strategy of a request speech act. Chapter Ⅲ made a situational investigation using discourse completion test (DCT) to set suitable request situations related to the methodology of the study. A pilot test was carried out with such a result before making the experiment and a framework of analysis was generated based on the result of the pilot test. In the experiment, 12 situational analyses were carried out proposing analysis methods. Participants of three groups, Korean native speakers (KNSs), Thai native speakers (TNSs), the TKLs took the DCT to be analyzed their pre-request strategy, request strategy and ending strategy and compared among three groups. Chapter Ⅳ discusses about the results obtained through the experiment. The holistic analysis was carried out and followed by each analysis for groups in respective situations. Additionally, analyses of each group were made in accordance with factors, that is, a burden degree, familiarity and relational position. Through the study result, it is possible to find the features of the use aspect of the pre-request strategy, request strategy and ending strategy of each group. The results of the study according to respective research questions are as follows. First, the results are examined by comparing the request speech act realization aspect of the KNSs and the TNSs in the first research question. There were many cases which the TNSs made a request without a pre-request, which suggests that the TNSs make a request more directly than the KNSs. Because, in this study, the KNSs and the TNSs were prepared questionnaires in their native languages, the request strategies were found very diversely and there was no great difference in the ratio of each strategy. Also, it was found that the TNSs used the ending strategy more than the pre-request strategy as a method of avoiding the face threatening or reducing burden of the listener. In conclusion, it was found the TNSs make a direct request more than the KNSs do. Secondly, the research question examines which strategy of the request speech act the TKLs use more like to between the KNSs and the TNSs. In the pre-request, it was revealed that the TKLs used more strategies with the TNSs than with the KNSs. The TKLs, in most cases, made a direct request without a pre-request similar to the TNSs, which shows they made a direct request more than the KNSs. In the request, it was found that the TKLs were not close to neither of the KNSs nor the TNSs. the TKLs preferred ‘-어/아 주세요’ of ‘making an explicit request’, the Request Strategy 5, in a very high rate. Additionally, it was found that even though the TKLs learned plenty of Korean sentence patterns, they have less abilities to actually use the learned sentence patterns and are not able to suitably use them under a wide variety of contexts. Meanwhile, TKLs were using the sentence patterns familiar to himself more than suitable sentence patterns according to a situation and it shows that the TKLs usually preferred strategies close to the TNSs to one close to the KNSs in the ending request. Thirdly, the burden degree is examined by the aspect of a requester and it is verified how the burden degree affects on the strategy when three groups make a request. It was found that three groups were feeling a similar burden degree, and the familiarity and the factor of relative position influenced a strategy use aspect more than a burden degree does. Finally, it is verified how different the strategies by each group are according to familiarity between the speaker and listener and each relative position when three groups performs a request speech act. As a study result of three groups, it was found that a strategy use aspect was different according to familiarity and a factor of relative position. It was found that the TKLs usually used a strategy similarly with the TNSs more than the KNSs. In the request, it was found that The TKLs, regardless of existence of familiarity, used most only ‘-어/아 주세요’ of ‘making an explicit request’, the Request Strategy 5. This can be interpreted as that the TNSs select and use familiar or safe sentence patterns under the influence of their native language. Accordingly, with the factor of relative position, the KNSs, in most cases, used two and more pre-request strategies to reduce the burden of a listener than the TNSs and the TKLs did, which seems to be because that the KNSs make a request to the listener with a higher position more indirectly. Chapter Ⅴ discusses suggestions for Korean teaching for Thai Korean learners. First, it was found that the TKLs used a strategy closer to the TNSs than the KNSs when making a request in Korean, because they were influenced by their native language. Therefore, the TKLs need to learn implication ability similar that of a Korean to increase their communication ability. Secondly, the situation in which Korean is used must be proposed to teach the TKLs implication ability. As the results of this study show, foreign learners can not use suitable expressions in various contexts when they are educated in only grammar or sentence structure, so it is necessary that a textbook should deal with a variety of utterance contexts to prevent that. Finally, it needs to inform a Korean-teaching teacher of knowledge of a speech act, because, even though there is any textbook which dealt with utterance contexts, if a teacher can not understand them, the teacher is not able to effectively deliver expressions according to utterance situations to a learner. As interest in Korean and the number of Korean learners has been increasing in Thailand recently, it is also increased, the necessity for teaching the TKLs how to use Korean in the contexts correctly. Suggestions for future research on a speech act are proposed for more pedagogical application in the field.
