Abstract
Technological development in network-based communication has been making distance language education possible in many promising ways. Even in CALL, which had been a term used for self-contained, programmed applications such as simulations in the past(Kern & Warschauer, 2000), changes have been made and it is now possible to communicate with other participants verbally or in writing, using network-based CALL software at the same time. It is in the context of these changes this research is trying to explore the possibilities of network-based simulation in language learning and teaching. It seems these network-based simulation softwares can provide somewhat limited virtual reality space where participants can feel a sense of "being there" and share real time virtual experience. In network-based task performance, appropriate setting and virtual activities for the participants can be supplied by employing network-based simulation softwares. Studies on interaction posit that interaction and negotiation of meaning may be effective in language acquisition, and it is in this context that researches on task type, CMC and CALL are in search of possible chances of negotiation of meaning. Therefore, this study investigates the effects of network-based simulation use and task types on the amount and complexity of negotiation of meaning, on the quantitative and qualitative features of the language data generated during task performance, and on post responses from the participants. Two dyads made up from 4 Korean adult learners had participated in 4 jigsaw tasks and 4 role-play tasks, under conditions of simulation use and non-simulation use. Language data generated across 8 tasks were transcribed for quantitative and qualitative analysis. To elicit responses from the participants, free opinion by e-mail after each task was collected and post survey, and post interview were conducted. The results are as following. First, confirming previous studies, jigsaw tasks showed more amount of negotiation of meaning than role-play tasks in either conditions. And simulation use decreased the amount of negotiation of meaning in jigsaw tasks, which could be explained by that simulation use had provided learners with shared virtual physical environment and thus lowering the amount of information gap between them. In case of role-play tasks, the amount of negotiation of meaning was increased by simulation use, which seems that simulation environment had given learners more opportunities to communicate in response to their shared setting, and avatar movements, including software operation. Simulation use turned out to complicate the negotiation process, which was evidenced by the amount of embedding and frequency of reaction to response in the negotiation routines. Second, role-play tasks showed higher lexical diversity, and smaller number of turns than jigsaw tasks in either condition. Simulation use in role-play tasks made learners spare their time on nonverbal task using simulation software during task performance, which extended the pause rate, and also made the performance period longer. Simulation use in jigsaw tasks had effects of extending the number of total turns. Third, analysis of the participants' response showed positive attitude in terms of overall network-based English speaking lessons, although because of the descriptive nature and small number of participants of this study, generalizations of these results to other populations should be made cautiously. In terms of simulation use, they mentioned potential advantages of a sense of reality, attention, longer retention, a variety of vocabulary usage, application to real-life, a sense of being there, and so forth. There also were disadvantages to simulation use, mainly as demands of software operation during task performance resulting in lack of attention, which would be easier once grasped. In sum, keeping in mind the relatively demanding software operation, the results of the analysis nevertheless suggest that learners using network-based simulation software engaged in L2 interaction in ways similar to previous face-to-face, CMC, or CALL studies suggesting this type of interaction facilitates comprehension and could lead to language acquisition. In addition, network-based simulation use seems to be able to provide distance learners virtual physical task settings which provide them with opportunities of interactional communication and negotiation of meaning.;급속한 과학기술의 발전과 함께 인터넷과 네트워크 제반 기술은 각종 교육 분야에서 다양하게 이용되고 있다.
