찰스 르네 맥킨토시의 조형요소 중 선에 의한 패턴 디자인

Abstract

과거 디자인의 철학과 사상은 우리의 삶과 디자인을 변화시키는데 중요한 역할을 해왔고, 이러한 역사적 고찰을 통해 현재의 시점에서 새로운 미래를 꿈 꿀 수 있다고 생각한다. 디자인은 미래를 위한 새로운 창조가 아니라 과거를 돌아보고 그들이 표현한 삶과 역사를 이해하여 미래를 향한 새로운 모색을 해야 한다. 텍스타일에 있어서도 과거 예술가들의 작품들을 연구하여 표현하거나 다양한 사고로 그 형태를 재구성하여 하나의 새로운 감각을 전달하는 조형 예술의 표현으로서 그 영역을 넓혀 다양한 창조 행위를 보여주고 있다. 현대 사회의 소비자들은 고도의 산업화와 기계화로 인한 모던하고 미니멀 한 형태를 선호하게 되었으며, 기하학의 형태는 이러한 현 시대를 이해하는 합리적인 조형으로서, 복잡한 형태를 단순함과 추상으로서 나타낼 수 있는 미감이며 형태이다. 특히 선은 기하학의 기본적 조형 단위로서 논리적이고 합리적인 형태로 극도로 단순화 되어진 형태이기 때문에 시각적으로 명쾌감을 주며 또한 우리의 시각을 자극하고 반응하게 하는 간결성이라는 특징 때문에 자신의 목적에 따라 변형하고 종합하여 다양한 특성을 표현할 수 있다. 이러한 현대인의 기호와 시대적 흐름의 이해를 바탕으로 본 연구자는 찰스 르네 맥킨토시의 모던하고 단순한 디자인 원리와 기하학의 대표적인 모티브로서 단순하고 명쾌한 선 형태의 접목을 통하여 새로운 패턴을 연구하여, 선은 고부가가치의 인테리어 패브릭으로서 실용성을 고려하여 본 연구를 전개해 보고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 맥킨토시 작품에서 표현된 직선의 흐름과 조형적 양식을 재해석하고, 그의 직선적이고 단순한 스타일에 영향을 준 글래스고우 학파 시절에 대해 살펴보았다. 또한 선에 대한 시각적 특성과 기존에 많은 스트라이프 디자인을 조사하여 각각의 의미를 이해하고 선의 형태와 컬러를 구성하여 화면상의 통일성과 공간감 색채감을 표현하였다. 이와 같은 연구를 통해 새로운 텍스타일 디자인의 모티브로서의 디자인 창출과 다양성, 실용성을 위한 개발 가능성을 제시하고자 한다. 본 연구자는 그러한 시도로서, 다음과 같은 연구 과정을 통해 결론을 도출하였다. 첫째, 찰스 르네 맥킨토시의 예술 세계에 직접적인 영향을 준 글래스고우 학파 시절에 대한 고찰과 그의 조형적 특성을 문헌을 통해 연구하였다. 둘째, 맥킨토시의 직선적인 요소와 기하학적 조형 요소를 분석하고 그의 작품에 대한 충분한 이해와 분석을 통하여 본 연구자의 디자인 모티브에 활용하였으며, 맥킨토시의 텍스타일 디자인을 통해 그의 디자인 특성을 살펴보았다. 또한 맥킨토시 작품을 응용하여 현재 시판되고 있는 제품 디자인을 시각적인 자료를 통해 조사하였다. 셋째, 선의 미적 개념을 고찰하고 본 연구에 표현된 직선의 조형성을 바탕으로 선에 대한 일반적인 개념과 특성을 조사하였다. 또한 순수미술과 디자인에 나타난 선의 상징적 조형성을 분석하여 선의 시각과 의미부여에 따라 다른 해석으로 디자인됨을 살펴보았다. 넷째, 현대 텍스타일에 표현된 선의 조형적 모티브가 활용된 예를 시각적 자료로 제시하여 선의 이미지가 어떤 형태로 디자인에 응용되었는지 살펴보았다. 이러한 과정으로 총 24 작품을 디자인하였으며, 이 중 10개의 작품을 선정하여 패턴 디자인으로서 개발을 위한 패브릭으로서 제작하였으며, 맥킨토시의 조형 원리와 선의 형태를 결합함으로서 다양한 표현 효과와 새로운 모티브로써 제안되어지고 발전할 수 있는 가능성을 부여하고자 한다.;All designs must be innovative as far as to the extent of proposing the concept of future (i.e. from simple arts to architectures). Humans always have been experimenting with what they had to expand and accumulate their areas of knowledge, this tendency results from human desire for always pursuing new things. However, instead of always looking beyond, sometimes looking back in the past and embracing what had been learnt can play an important role in projecting for future. Likewise, knowing the history of art, and knowing how art has evolved to influence human lifestyle may be very crucial in predicting future. this future in the boundaries of design and how design will affect our lifestyles. Thus, design should not try to create new things from nothing instead it should build up on what had already been available to search for better resolution or improvement in future. As a result of highly industrialized and automated environment of today's world, modern consumers have come to prefer simple designs to complex designs. By viewing the contemporary design trend as such, I believe it is of great importance to study "Charles Rennie Mackintosh" who is famous for his modernity and simple design tendencies. Furthermore, the fundamental tools of geometry-simple, precise two-dimensional lines-combined to come up with new patterns will be studied, and methods to put these designs into practical use in the high profit yielding interior fabrics area will be looked upon. In detail, this paper will seek to reinterpret the usage of straight lines and figurative styles used in many of Mackintosh's art works. Also, what has influenced his style the Glasgow four and Japanese culture will be studied. Based on the studies of Mackintosh's usage of lines, methods to further develop the modeling of these lines will be sought. In order to do this, deeper investigation of visual effects of mere lines and also some of the “stripe" designs will be carried out. This process then will be used to creatively and freely express the figurative factors of lines; further, this figurativeness can be used as motives for new textile designs, and can be the determinant for possibility of practical usage. This paper will follow the below outline in reaching its conclusion. First, the Glasgow four and Japanese cultures, which influenced Mackintosh's design will be studied. Second, meanings of Mackintosh's usage of line and figurative geometry will be analyzed. Then, through understanding and studying of some of Mackintosh's works, his design features will be explained and further my personal adaptation of his design significances will be shown. Some of the consumer goods, which inherited Mackintosh design will also be shown in order to emphasize the possibility of commercializing. Third, distinct and artistic features of lines will be studied. Also, the usage of lines on each of pure art and design art and their symbolic and figurative meanings in each occasion will be examined to show lines can be differently acknowledged depending on design concepts and where about the usage is intended. Fourth, how images of lines are embraced in contemporary textiles design will be shown. Due process of analyzing and combining Mackintosh's formative principles and various usage of lines in design, hopefully will be examined through this paper to show how newer expression can more possibly suggested and similarly, innovative art forms this process of combining can create for the future.
