영유아 그림책에서의 고양이 캐릭터 시각표현에 관한 연구

Abstract

Animal characters in a picture book provoke curiosity of young children and enable them to demonstrate imagination. Animals in picture books are beautiful and lively and they are featured with unique shapes and figures and facial expressions, so that authors can create many stories out of their rich imaginations. Extreme human characteristics or behaviors are easily expressed by using animal characters in the picture book. Animal characters appear in more than half of the young children's picture books currently published. However, there has been no systematic study on the illustration of animal characters appearing in picture books, neither in Korea nor abroad. A cat character is one of the most beloved animal characters for children and appears in many picture books. In this study, the visual representation methods of cat characters in young children's picture books were studied. 160 young children's picture books in that a cat character stars as a hero or a heroine were selected worldwide. Characteristics of visual representation methods of cat characters and the correlation among the characteristics were analysed by using frequency percentage table. The analysed characteristics were the expression methods of the colors and shapes, the personification, and the body ratio of the cat characters. Moreover the correlation of the characteristics of the visual representation methods of cat characters with the publishing year of the picture books, the illustrators’ nationalities, the age of the target children, literature genre, and the illustration style and technique of pictures were also analysed. This study is the first to introduce the concept of degree of correlation, thereby identifying quantitatively the intensity of the correlation of the illustration characteristics.;영유아 그림책에서 동물캐릭터는 영아 및 유아들의 흥미를 자극하고 상상력을 발휘할 수 있도록 하는 중요한 등장인물이다. 그림책 속의 동물은 아름답고 생명력이 있으며 그 모양과 모습 그리고 표정이 특색이 있어서 작가가 풍부한 상상력으로 많은 이야기를 만들어내고 그려낼 수 있다. 또한 동물 캐릭터들을 사용하면 극단적인 인간 특성이나 행동들도 용이하게 표현할 수 있다. 현재 출판된 영유아 그림책 중 반 이상에서 동물 캐릭터가 등장하고 있다. 그런데 그림책에서 등장하는 동물 캐릭터의 시각표현 특성들에 관한 체계적인 연구는 국내는 물론 외국에서도 거의 보고된 바가 없다. 본 연구에서는 여러 가지 동물 캐릭터 중 유아들이 가장 좋아하는 동물캐릭터 중의 하나이며 많은 그림책 속에 등장하는 고양이 캐릭터를 선정하여, 영유아 그림책에서의 고양이 캐릭터의 시각표현에 관하여 연구하였다. 고양이 캐릭터가 주인공으로 등장하는 세계 각국의 영유아용 그림책 160권에 대하여, 고양이 캐릭터의 표현 색채 및 형태 표현방법, 의인화 방식 및 특성, 인체비율과 같은 고양이 캐릭터의 시각표현 특성들과 그 특성들 간의 상관관계에 대하여 문항간 빈도백분율을 이용하여 분석하였다.또한 고양이 캐릭터 시각표현 특성들과 그림책의 출판년도, 그림작가의 출신국가, 대상 어린이 연령, 문학장르, 일러스트레이션 표현양식 및 표현도구와의 상관관계도 분석하였다. 미술 분야에서는 처음으로 상관도 개념을 도입하여, 각 특성 항목간의 상관관계의 강한 정도를 정량적으로 파악하였다.
