섬유작품에 있어서 2중직에 관한 연구

Abstract

모든 예술은 갑자기 형성되는 것이 아니라 어떠한 맥락을 가지고 단계적으로 복잡하고 순환적인 과정을 거쳐서 형성된다. 조형예술에 있어서 시대에 따라 형태가 강조되기도 하고 혹은 색채가 강조되기도 하였던 것과 같이 그 당시의 주된 관점에 따라 시대상을 반영하며 여러 가지 예술이 다양하게 형성되어 왔다. 이와 같이 조형예술의 사적(史的) 흐름에 따라서 섬유예술도 많은 변화와 발전을 가져왔다. 특히, 오래전부터 탐구되어온 2중직 (Double Weaves)은 1920년대에 활동한 Anni Albers에 이어 1960년대에 Richard Landis, Kay Sekimachi에 의해 활발하게 연구되었다. 1970년대에는 Warren Seelig에 의해 그 맥락이 이어지고 있으나 1980년대 전반기에 이르러서는 그다지 많은 연구가 시행되지 못하였다. 2중직은 한 겹으로 된 직물(Single Weave)보다 형태, 기능, 표현기법 등에서 직물의 구조적 특성이 매우 다양하게 응용될 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 2중직의 가능성이 여러 가지 측면으로 호조건에 있음에도 불구하고 깊이를 더해가며 무르익지 못한 점을 문제로 제기하였다. 이론적 배경으로는 2중직의 개념, 종류, 특성을 문헌적으로 고찰한 후 2중직을 탐구해 왔던 대표적인 작가를 들어 그들의 작품세계를 분석하였다. 또한, 4종광 수직기를 이용하여 2중직의 특성을 살려 본인의 작품을 부조적으로 범위를 좁혀서 제작하였고 그 제작동기, 과정, 의도, 결과를 설명하였다. 본 논문을 계기로 2중직에 지속적인 관심을 가지고 꾸준히 연구해 나감으로써 3중직(Treble Weaves), 4중직(Quadruple Weaves), 다중직(Multiple Ply Weaves)등으로 범위를 확대하여 깊이 있게 연구되길 바라며 그 결과 섬유예술에 지대한 발전을 가져오게 되길 기대한다.;Since the World War Ⅰ, many fiber artists have been interested in the technique of DOUBLE WEAVES. DOUBLE WEAVES had been researched by ANNI ALBERS in the early 1920s for the first time. Following her DOUBLE WEAVES had been activitily studied since 1960s by some fiber artist: RICHARD LANDIS, KAY SEKIMACHI and by WARREN SEELIG in 1970s. In KOREA few fiber artists work with DOUBLE WEAVES technique. DOUBLE WEAVE technique gives more exciting varieties of shape and function than the plane weave. In this thesis, I mentioned several representative artists who work with DOUBLE WEAVES and analyzed the view of their works comparing each other theoretically. I produced my works using the DOUBLE WEAVES technique on the four-harnesses Jack-Type Loom. I also explained the motive, technique, process, intention of the final works. We are looking forward to the further development of treble weaves, quadruple weaves, multiple-ply weaves for the continuous progress.
